How We Test Air Purifiers

Our thorough testing of each air purifier means you can trust our reviews to know exactly what you're investing in.

Important Note: All of our tests are performed at home, in sealed rooms with no airflow from outside. This keeps conditions consistent across tests while still reflecting how an air purifier performs in a real living space.

Real Life Use: We use almost every air purifier we test for at least 7 days in our own homes. (Exceptions are only made if a device demonstrates clear performance failure or safety issues).

Our Scoring Philosophy

We weigh our scores based on what actually matters to your health. We prioritize Performance, followed by Value, and finally Livability.

🚀

1. Performance

(Weighted Heavily)
We prioritize CADR and filter efficiency above all. If it can't clean the air effectively in the room size it claims, it fails.

💸

2. Value

(Weighted Moderately)
We look at Price-to-Performance ratio. Expensive units must justify their cost with superior results, taking into account operating costs and noise.

🏡

3. Livability

(Weighted Lightly)
The Tie-Breaker. While smart features and aesthetics matter, they remain secondary to raw air cleaning power.

The 5 Core Parameters We Score:

1. Performance
2. Noise Level
3. Operating Cost
4. Value for Money
5. Ease of Use
9.5 and above Outstanding Score
9.0 – 9.4 Excellent Score
8.0 – 8.9 Good Score
7.0 – 7.9 Fair Score
6.0 – 6.9 Mediocre Score
5.0 – 5.9 Poor Score
4.9 and less Terrible Score
Airborne Particle Removal Test

Performance Testing

The main goal is to measure efficiency. We test in real-life environments (bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens) to observe direct impact on air quality.

The Testing Procedure

1
Baseline Measurement - We spike the room with pollutants (by burning incense) to create a high baseline, then measure the air quality using the Temtop LKC-1000S.
2
The 60-Minute Run - We seal the room and run the air purifier at maximum speed for exactly one hour.
3
Final Analysis - We measure the improvement across four key metrics:
PM2.5 (µg/m³) PM10 (µg/m³) Particles/L AQI

Our Testing Environments:

120 sq. ft. Small Units
194 sq. ft. Standard Room
320 sq. ft. Large Room
560 sq. ft. Extra Large
730 sq. ft. Extreme Power

PM1 To Zero Test

PM1 Time-to-Zero Test

To get a clearer picture of an air purifier's performance at different fan speeds, not just at maximum output, we performe an additional, more advanced test with the AirGradient ONE air quality monitor.

Target Range: 190–200 µg/m³ PM1

The Testing Procedure

1
Spike the Room - In a 1430 ft³ (40.5 m³) test room, we burn incense until the PM1 reading reaches between 190 and 200 µg/m³.
2
Run at a Single Speed - We turn on the air purifier at one fan speed and use the AirGradient ONE to time exactly how long it takes for PM1 to drop back down to zero.
3
Repeat for Every Speed - We reset the room and repeat the entire process for each individual fan speed.
4
Build a Comparison Chart - The result is a per-speed Time-to-Zero chart, making it easy to compare how two different air purifiers perform at matching fan speeds, not just at maximum output.

This test runs alongside, not instead of, our standard 60-minute room performance test.

The Smoke Box Test

This is a unique test that makes us incredibly proud. It visually demonstrates the raw power of a device.

1

Place device in the glass box.

2

Fill the box with smoke.

3

Turn on max speed.

4

Time the removal process.

This provides an easy visual comparison between different models.

Living With The Device

Air purifiers run 24/7. We measure the subtle details that affect your daily life: the buzz of the motor and the impact on your electricity bill.

🔊 Noise Level

We measure noise at all fan speeds in dBA scale, using a special noise measurement tool.

What We Look For

  • Full Range Testing: Measured from Sleep Mode to Turbo.
  • CADR-to-Noise Ratio: How much air it cleans per decibel at maximum speed.
  • Subjective Analysis: Checking for motor buzz or rattling noises.
Test Tool: Decibel Meter Noise Level Testing

⚡ Power Efficiency

We measure power consumption at all speeds to understand the full energy profile of the device.

What We Look For

  • Efficiency Metric: We calculate the CADR-to-Power ratio at maximum speeds.
  • Standby Power: Does it drain energy when "off"?
  • Monthly Cost: Calculated at $0.12/kWh.
Test Tool: Watt Meter Power Consumption Testing
The User Experience

Features & Usability Analysis

Performance isn't everything. If a device is frustrating to use, it won't be effective. We evaluate three key areas:

📱

Smart Features

  • Connectivity: Is pairing seamless?
  • Voice Control: Alexa/Google support.
  • Auto Mode: Air quality sensor accuracy and reliability.
🔧

Maintenance

  • Filter Change: Easy click-in vs. tools needed.
  • Cleaning: Washable pre-filters.
  • Proprietary Tech: Avoidance of "lock-in" systems.
🛠️

Build Quality

  • Materials: Premium plastic vs. hollow feel.
  • Controls: Touch vs. physical buttons.
  • Mobility: Handles and wheels.

🛡️ Long-Term Support Matters

Beyond the initial purchase, we highly value Replacement Filter Availability and Warranty Terms. If we cannot easily find replacement filters, or if the warranty coverage is poor, the device loses significant points in our "Value for Money" score.
