Best Cheap Air Purifiers That Really Work (Backed by Data)

Want cleaner air without overspending? These affordable air purifiers combine strong performance, energy efficiency, and unbeatable value.

Think budget air purifiers can’t get the job done? It’s a common belief and often true. Many low-cost models come with weak motors and tiny filters and struggle to clean even the smallest rooms.

Some are barely larger than a Bluetooth speaker and offer little more than white noise. But not all affordable air purifiers are a waste of money. A handful of well-designed, budget-friendly models actually deliver impressive results—removing dust, smoke, and allergens effectively.

Sure, you won’t find a reliable air purifier for $30 or even $50. Devices in that price range often come with tiny filters, low CADR ratings, and underwhelming performance. We’ve tested many of them, and the results speak for themselves: most barely improve air quality.

In this guide, I’ll show you which ones are worth your time and money—backed by real-world tests and data.

In a Hurry? Here’s a Quick Summary of the Top 5 Cheap Air Purifiers!

  • Winix A231 – The best budget air purifier you can get. It delivers excellent performance, is affordable to maintain, and uses high-quality filtration technology.

  • Coway Airmega 100 – Also a perfect budget option. It features advanced filtration technology, includes some premium features, and delivered outstanding results in our tests. Ideal for spaces up to 169 sq. ft. (15.7 m²).

The Winix A231 is a classic cylindrical air purifier in this price range, but it stands out with impressive features, four-stage filtration, and excellent test results.

What truly defines this model is its high-quality True HEPA filter, which plays a major role in its outstanding test performance. The final stage of filtration is the PlasmaWave technology, which is enabled by default but can be turned off if preferred.

To be honest, most air purifiers on this list have a similar CADR, but the Winix A231 stands out with the highest CADR of 147 CFM (250 m³/h), making it ideal for rooms up to 230 sq. ft. (21 m²).

When it comes to performance, there’s not much more to say—Winix A231 delivered fantastic results. In a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room, it improved air quality by an impressive 95%.

As a budget air purifier, what I also like about the Winix A231 is that its filters need to be replaced only once a year on average, they’re affordable, and the power-to-CADR ratio is excellent.

All these facts make the Winix A231 the best cheap air purifier you can buy. It’s ideal for bedrooms, kids’ rooms, living spaces, and similar environments.

Another air purifier that, although slightly more expensive than the previously recommended Winix A231, definitely deserves a spot on this list is the Levoit Vital 100S.

This is one of the most efficient small air purifiers we’ve tested. Not only that—it’s also extremely energy efficient, uses affordable replacement filters, and comes with plenty of smart features.

So, even though it may have a slightly higher upfront cost compared to some other models on the list, the low long-term maintenance costs can easily balance out the overall expenses.

What I especially like about the Levoit Vital 100S is that it uses a 35W motor, making it a low-power consumer—and it’s also very quiet at lower speeds.

The AirFanta 3Pro is quite different from the commercial air purifiers I usually recommend. However, it offers a great price, four filters, and a travel-friendly design.

At a truly affordable price, the AirFanta delivers a high CADR, outstanding performance, and well-optimized fans that keep noise levels low.

It has a CADR of 413 CFM (702 m³/h), making it ideal for spaces up to 645 sq. ft. (60 m²). This means the AirFanta 3Pro is not only one of the best budget air purifiers but also one of the most efficient, affordable models for large rooms.

In our performance tests, it achieved excellent results. In a 560 sq. ft. (52 m²) room, it improved air quality by about 96%, which is an impressive outcome.

Additionally, it consumes only 38W, giving it one of the best CADR-to-power ratios on the market.

Still, there are a few drawbacks: it doesn’t look particularly modern, lacks smart features, and doesn’t include a filter reset indicator.

Despite these downsides, the AirFanta 3Pro performed exceptionally well and stood out as one of the best air purifiers we’ve tested.

Levoit Core 300 Highlights

  • The Levoit Core 300 is ideal for rooms up to 219 sq. ft. (20 m²), and it also performs well in slightly larger spaces.
  • It uses a three-stage filtration system, with filters lasting up to 8 months. There are also plenty of affordable third-party filters available on the market.
  • It’s Energy Star and CARB certified and contains no ionizer, UV light, or any other additional filtration technologies, making it completely safe to use.
  • This is one of the best small air purifiers we’ve tested—perfect for smaller rooms.

The Levoit Core 300 is not only one of Levoit’s most popular models but also one of the best-selling air purifiers on the market overall.

It features a 3-in-1 filtration system, which includes a nylon mesh pre-filter, a main filter, and an activated carbon filter. The filter typically lasts between 6 to 8 months.

What makes the Levoit Core 300 an ideal budget air purifier is its affordable price, high-quality carbon filter, outstanding performance, and excellent results in our smoke test.

While it doesn’t offer smart features, it still includes essential functions like a timer, child lock, and sleep mode, all of which enhance everyday usability.

The device is also very quiet in operation, producing just 41.4 dBA at the lowest speed. In a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room, it improved air quality by 94%, and in the smoke test, it cleared all the smoke from the glass box in just 20 seconds, which is faster than some air purifiers twice its size.

I recommend the Levoit Core 300 to anyone looking for a budget-friendly, low-maintenance air purifier for bedrooms, living rooms, offices, and similar spaces.

However, if you’re looking for additional features like smart controls, you might want to consider the Levoit Vital 100S, which is also featured on this list and offers similar specifications to the Core 300, plus smart functionality.

The Coway Airmega 100 is a relatively new device on the market, but it has quickly gained popularity due to its price, solid specs, and the huge reputation of the Coway brand.

This model has a CADR of 109 CFM (185 m³/h), making it well-suited for rooms up to 169 sq. ft. (15.7 m²).

It features a three-stage filtration technology, and what stands out most to me is the True HEPA filter, which I believe is primarily responsible for the excellent results this model achieved in our tests.

One important detail, especially when it comes to budget air purifiers, is that the filter on this model typically lasts up to 12 months.

When you factor in the affordable replacement filters and the efficient motor, it’s clear that the Coway Airmega 100 is an outstanding budget-friendly choice.

Another key advantage is how quiet it is during operation, even at max speed, it’s noticeably quieter than many other devices on this list. On top of that, it offers one of the best power-to-CADR ratios.

All of this makes the Coway Airmega 100 my top personal recommendation for anyone looking to buy an affordable, high-performance air purifier for small rooms.

Things to Consider Before Buying an Air Purifier

If your budget is the main factor in choosing an air purifier, that’s not a problem—there are plenty of great options available today. To make your decision easier, I‘ve narrowed it down to the top 5 best affordable air purifiers that offer real value for the price.

While this buying guide focuses primarily on cost, it’s also important to consider what type of air purifier you actually need—whether it’s for allergens, odors, smoke, or general use.

Good to Know Before You Decide

Whether you’re buying an air purifier for the bedroom, living room, or office, the most important step is knowing why you need one in the first place.

Before making a purchase, you should answer a few key questions:

  • What do you want the air purifier to handle?
  • What type of space will it be used in?

Once you’ve identified your needs, it’s much easier to choose the right device.

The difference between HEPA and Carbon Filters
An activated carbon and a HEPA filter are on the office table. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

Through my testing, I’ve found that many cheap air purifiers are built with low-quality materials, underpowered motors, and small filters. Most come with only a HEPA-like filter and lack a carbon filter, which is essential for fighting odors.

With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of the most affordable air purifiers tailored for different needs. These models use various technologies and are suitable for various room sizes. The best part? You don’t have to wait for Black Friday to get a great deal.

Is Price a Reliable Indicator of Quality?

Not necessarily. A high price doesn’t guarantee quality, and a low price doesn’t always mean poor performance. In my opinion, the best approach is to read buying guides and trusted reviews before making a purchase.

Once you understand what to look for in an air purifier, price becomes secondary.

For example, we’ve tested many low-cost air purifiers (not featured in this article) that are popular but not worth buying. They’re often too small, ineffective, and fail to perform as advertised.

If your main goal is to remove strong odors—like cooking smells or cigarette smoke—you’ll need a device with a larger carbon filter, which typically means a higher volume of carbon pellets inside.

Where Will You Use the Air Purifier?

One common mistake buyers make is not thinking about where they’ll place the air purifier.

Best Air Purifiers For Kitchen Odors
An air purifier placed in the kitchen. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

The location determines what features the device should have.

  • If you’re using it in the bedroom, it should have a sleep mode for quiet operation. However, if you’re a deep sleeper, this feature might not be essential.
  • For the kitchen or smoking areas, the purifier must include a carbon filter to effectively eliminate odors.
  • In the living room—usually the largest and most frequently used space—you’ll need a device with strong airflow and a high CADR to ensure the air is cleaned efficiently.

FAQ on Cheap Air Purifiers

Does a Cheap Device Mean Poor Performance?

Definitely not. The air purifiers I’ve listed as the best budget options are among the more affordable models on the market—yet they’ve delivered excellent performance in real-world tests. In fact, many of them compete closely with much more expensive devices.

If you’re aiming for the best possible performance, be sure the air purifier includes a HEPA filter and a carbon filter. Every model on this list uses high-quality filters to ensure reliable particle filtration.

What Should You Look for Besides the Price?

A low upfront price can sometimes be misleading. That’s why it’s important to consider other key factors that affect the long-term cost and efficiency of the device, such as: motor power (wattage), cost of replacement filters, and how often the filters need to be replaced.

These factors can significantly influence how affordable the device really is over time.

What Should Every Air Purifier Include?

In my opinion, a HEPA filter alone isn’t always enough. You should avoid devices that don’t also include a carbon filter, as the carbon layer is essential for removing unpleasant odors from your home.

When combined, HEPA and carbon filters provide much more comprehensive air purification, improving both particle capture and odor control.

Final Thoughts

In this guide, I’ve highlighted some of the best affordable air purifiers currently available. Each device was carefully analyzed and selected for its performance, build quality, and ability to meet the needs of most users—without breaking the bank.

While air purifiers may still seem like a luxury to some, they no longer have to be. Thanks to growing competition in the market, prices have dropped significantly, making it easier than ever to find effective, high-quality air purifiers at a reasonable cost.

In my opinion, the best inexpensive air purifier you can buy right now is the Winix A231. It delivers exceptional performance, includes a robust filtration system, and offers excellent value overall.

Right behind it is the Levoit Vital 100S, which combines strong purification capabilities with smart features and energy efficiency.

Whichever model you choose from this list, you’re making a smart choice for cleaner air on a budget.

I already considered the IKEA UPPÅTVIND air purifier when I was writing this article, but unfortunately, there are many air purifiers that are far better than this IKEA.

    Hello,
I live in a heavily polluted area – actually, my city (Turin) is thee most polluted big city in Europe in terms of PM2,5 and PM10 concentration.
Which air purifier would you suggest buying in order to reduce as much as possible the concentration of those particles in my apartment? Thank you!

    Hi,

I want to know if some air purifier use standard filters or all time proprietary one?

Did you Try the Sensibo Pure Filter?

And, it’s one thing to buy, but what purifier is best buy for the buck when it’s time to change filters?

    Thanks

  5. Simon

Could you tell me ( since most products don’t tell you. ) The ” average” KWH per 24 hours , of each level of an air purifier, for example running on ” sleep ” mode , can be much less expensive than other levels! Thanks

    • Milan Antonic

Sure! Please tell me the air purifier name for which you want me to provide you kWh readings at different speeds?

  6. Ben

Hi. Love the site, very informative and helped me chose the right unit. I do have a suggestion, with costs rising of everything and especially electricity could you do a ‘long term running cost’ article that covers 3 years of use from a filter replacement and electricity cost point of view for budget and mid range purifiers?
I would say you only need average running times but it would help know if outrageously over priced filters and inefficient motors can be a costly mistake.
    Thanks again!
    Ben

    • Milan Antonic

      Hi Ben.
Thanks for your suggestion, I will definitely consider it and give my best to update the article!

Which of these would you recommend for a college dorm? It’s 2 kids in one room and have been known to have poor air circulation. Lots of students have complained of mold issue and vents not being cleaned. This is all in Arizona so dry heat, if it matters.
    Thanks
