RATING

My objective opinion is that the Clarifion Ionizer makes some changes in the air, and the air feels different and even cleaner when the Clarifion is turned on. My performance tests also confirm this, but is it enough to make the Clarifion air ionizer a buying recommendation?

Frankly, I always prefer an air purifier with a HEPA filter rather than an ionizer, which is also my recommendation. We reviewed plenty of HEPA air purifiers, and the Clarifion underperformed all of them. It improved the air quality in a 65 sq. ft. room by about just 44% in 60 minutes, which is the lowest result we ever got.

However, if you want a very cheap, portable, plug-in device that doesn’t require filter replacement and is somehow effective in reducing airborne particles, then the Clarifion air ionizer may be a good choice for you.

If you have questions about the Clarifion air ionizer, please leave a comment in the comment section below.

What we really like?

  • It produces ozone as a byproduct but in allowed amounts, which is confirmed by being CARB-certified.

  • This product doesn’t use filters, so there is no need for filter replacement.

  • The Clarion is one of the quietest devices out there; it produces almost no noise.

  • It’s very affordable, easy to maintain, and cheap to run.

What could be better?

  • The Clarifion air ionizer isn’t very effective in cleaning the air, which is confirmed in performance tests.

  • It doesn’t actually clean the air; it uses ionization technology instead of having physical filters.

  • It’s totally inefficient against VOCs, smoke, and bad odors.

  • It produces ozone.

Full Review

I do my best to purchase and review every air purifier that catches my attention. Still, occasionally, I find some devices worth evaluating that aren’t necessarily air purifiers but very similar devices: ionizers, air quality monitors, etc. That’s why I bought the Clarifion air ionizer, and in this article, I will do a comprehensive review of it.

Clarifion Air Ionizer - In-depth Review

The Clarifion is an ionizer, not an air purifier. It modifies the states of airborne particles, depositing them onto surfaces instead of keeping them floating in the air, in contrast to traditional air purifiers that capture and remove airborne particles.

It’s a simple plug-in ionizer, very compact, reasonably priced, and popular among users. The Clarifion Ionizer doesn’t have a fan; instead, it generates negative ions in the air using electrostatic ionization technology. These negative ions naturally adhere to positively charged pollutants like dust, pollen, pet dander, etc., making them heavier and causing them to settle on surfaces such as walls, furniture, and floors.

I performed different tests on this compact air ionizer, answered numerous unanswered questions, managed an in-depth evaluation of the Clarifion Ionizer, and finally determined whether it was a worthwhile purchase or not.

How We Tested the Clarifion Ionizer?

1. For the filter efficiency testing, we used the Temtop LKC-1000S laser particle meter, which measures PM2.5 (µg/m3), PM10 (µg/m3), Particles (per/L), and HCHO (mg/m3) in the air, and also calculates the AQI.

2. We placed the Clarifion Ionizer in a 65 sq. ft. (6 m²) room. Then, we recorded the initial air quality values using the Temtop laser particle meter and let the Clarifion Ionizer run at maximum speed.

3. After 60 minutes, we measured the new values using the Temtop laser particle meter and saved the data.

4. Using a special noise measurement tool, we tested the Clarifion’s noise level. We measured the noise level on the dBA scale.

5. Finally, we measured the power usage using an energy meter, after which we calculated how much it would cost to use the device at a particular fan speed for one month. For reference, we used an energy price of $0.12 per kWh.

Performance – Particle Removal Tests

Despite not actively cleaning the air, the Clarifion air ionizer reduces a substantial amount of airborne particles, as evidenced by my performance tests.

Clarifion Ionizer - Opening on the side
Opening on the side. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

The first thing I must mention is that the Clarifion air ionizer actually doesn’t clean the air; it just reduce a huge amount of airborne particles. As my tool (and likely any similar tool) for testing the air quality measures the volume of airborne particles, I successfully measured how well/fast the Clarifion ionizer neutralizes airborne particles.

# Starting Baseline After 60 min
PM 2.5 96.5 µg/m³ 51.4 µg/m³
PM 10 135.1 µg/m³ 71.9 µg/m³
Particles 140016 per/L 74563 per/L
AQI 126 70

For 60 minutes of working in a 65 sq. ft. room, it reduced the airborne particles in the air by about 44%, which is much lower than some of the worst air purifiers I have tested so far.

For example, the Levoit Core Mini, which is in the same price range, improved the air quality by about 91% in my tests. Also, one of the lowest-performing air purifiers I have tested so far, the Jinpus, has also made better results in performance testing than the Clarifion ionizer.

What I also tested is how the Clarifion ionizer acts in conditions with high amounts of VOCs, such as in the kitchen or in places with huge amounts of cigarette smoke. In conclusion, it doesn’t work for neutralizing VOCs.

You could use the Clarifion air ionizer in places with dust, allergens, dander, and similar airborne particles in the air. But, if you ask me, I would definitely give priority to any air purifier with a HEPA filter instead.

Noise Levels Test

Although the Clarifion Ionizer lacks a fan or any significant noise-producing components, I tested its noise levels, confirming its whisper-quiet operation

Being very quiet when operating makes this ionizer a great option for use in bedrooms, offices, libraries, or similar places.

10

Operating Costs – Power Usage Test & Filter Price

This is the most energy-efficient device I have tested so far. The Clarifion air ionizer uses less than 1W when working.

You won’t notice any raises in your electrical bill as this ionizer uses almost no power. What is also so great about this ionizer is that you can keep it running 24/7 with minimal power usage. Just plug it into any electrical socket and leave it for constant purification day and night.

Ionization Technology

The Clarifion air ionizer uses a negative ion filtration technology. It releases negatively charged ions into the air, attaching to positively charged airborne particles like dust, allergens, and dander. These negative ions may make positively charged airborne particles heavy, causing them to fall to the ground, where they can be swept up or vacuumed.

What’s the catch here is that the Clarifion doesn’t use any filter, so you don’t have to replace them, but it also doesn’t actually remove or capture particles; it just makes them fall to the bottom.

So, when using the Clarifion air ionizer, you mightn’t see many airborne particles around you but will see much more dust on floors, carpets, furniture, etc.

While the Clarifion air ionizer is CARB-certified and complies with strict California laws regarding ozone production, it’s essential to note that a large amount of ozone could negatively affect human health.

Setup & Installation

This device comes ready to use, requiring no preparations before the first start. Simply plug it in, and you’re good to go.

Design & Controls

The Clarifion air ionizer is a small, aesthetically pleasing device designed in California. It boasts excellent build and plastic quality.

What’s the first thing I noticed after getting this device is that it’s much smaller than I initially thought it would be. It looks more like an air quality monitor than an air cleaning device.

This ionizer doesn’t have any buttons but has a blue light indicator that indicates that the device is turned on. Personally, I would prefer a button to turn off this blue light.

The Clarifion is available in white, making it a charming addition to almost any ambiance.

Airflow

As I mentioned earlier, the Clarifion Ionizer doesn’t have a fan, resulting in not having any airflow. Its operational principle revolves around emitting negative ions into the surrounding air.

Size and Dimensions

Measuring just 0.16 lbs and 1.82 x 2.56 x 4.13 inches in size, the Clarifion Ionizer is notably smaller than traditional air purifiers.

It reminds me of some air quality monitors I have also tested. For reference, I took an image where I put the Clarifion ionizer and an air quality monitor side-by-side.

What is in the Box?

After purchasing the Clarifion air ionizer, you receive 1x Clarifion and 1x User manual.

FAQ on Clarifion Ionizer

Does the Clarifion ionizer work?

It does the thing it’s made to. But, for proper air filtration, I would always instead buy an air purifier with a traditional HEPA filter: such a device usually doesn’t produce ozone and captures/removes airborne particles, which is not the case with the Clarifion ionizer.

Is the Clarifion safe to use?

An ionizer that could produce large amounts of ozone as a byproduct. However, the Clarifion ionizer is CARB-certified, meaning it produces ozone in the allowed amounts, ensuring it’s safe to use.

Does it have filters?

Clarified is an ionizer, which means it doesn’t have any filter.

What’s the warranty for the Clarifion ionizer?

Clarifion offers a 30-day return period and an optional 2-year extended warranty, available for purchase on their website.

Should you use more than one Clarifion?

Frankly, I wouldn’t use more than 2-3 Clarifion Ionizers in a home. These devices are CARB-certified and produce no harmful amount of ozone, but more than one Clarifion may produce more ozone, which can go above the allowed/recommended amounts, especially in smaller places.

Is Clarifion ionizer the same as an air purifier?

No, the Clarifion Ionizer works completely differently. It releases negative ions into the air without capturing or removing airborne particles. On the other hand, air purifiers usually have different filtration types that capture or remove airborne particles in the air.

When to clean your Clarifion ionizer?

I would suggest cleaning the Clarifion ionizer at least once monthly. However, if you ever hear a faint clicking noise from your Clarifion, it means it’s time for cleaning ion emitter points. You can do so using a soft brush or cloth.

  1. Denise Morgan-Irish

What drew me to this product is claims about ammonia from cat urine… If it really doesn’t work for that… which wasn’t specific in your review…what does??? Is appreciate any recommendations as I have a problem kitty and I’m concerned about the ammonia having health impacts!

    • Milan Antonic

I haven’t tested it for that specific purpose, but I strongly believe it’s not effective against ammonia.

Instead, you’d need something designed to remove VOCs. One air purifier I often recommend, and that works great for most people, is the Levoit Vital 200S.

  2. Vicki O'Neill

I bought the Clarifion 5pack after seeing an ad that said grandma doesn’t have to dust anymore. Haha. Over & over I see it doesn’t not eliminate dust but causes dust to fall on floors or anything else. I called the company & since it was a little over their allowed time I am out of luck. It true does not do what they said.

    • Milan Antonic

Yes, you’re absolutely right, the Clarifion doesn’t remove dust from the air. It simply makes it settle on surfaces.

  3. Annie

Whether Clarifion is a scam is debated, with many users reporting poor performance and difficulty with returns, while others claim satisfaction. The product’s technology is a negative ionizer, which works by making particles stick to surfaces, not by filtering them out, so it may require more cleaning to remove particles completely. Some negative reviews point to issues like ineffective odor neutralization and fraudulent order adjustments.

  4. Jeanne

I have one plugged in my bedroom for 4 or 5 years. The light is still blue. Do I need to replace it?

    • Milan Antonic

If it’s still blue, you don’t need to replace it.

  5. Maureen Sullivan

Has returning the Clarifon Ionizer been problematic?
I believe I got sucked into buying this product as the advertisement indicated it would help remove or minimize MOLD.
Sometimes we get sucked into buying junk?
I am extremely appreciative of the reviews performed by Milan and other people who have purchased this device.
    Thank you.

    • Milan Antonic

I believe the return procedure is straightforward. Please contact Clarifion directly to request a return.

  6. Joan Tedeschi

I ordered three plug ins before realizing that none of my outlets are out in the open. All are at baseboard level behind furniture so I don’t think the plug ins will be very effective. I also noticed at checkout that Clarifion tries to sell us replacement bulbs for the units warning they will never be this low priced again. I don’t want to be buying new bulbs every eight months as they suggest. I am planning to return the units. I hope it is not difficult to do so.

    • Milan Antonic

I’m just a reviewer and not familiar with their return policies, but I strongly believe you should be able to return all three Clarifions without any issues.

  7. Tes Sanderlin

I purchased several units but not happy with the results. Sensitive to ions in the air. Also, dust is settling on surfaces especially on carpets. and surfaces allergen to me.
    I am returning this purchase.

      Thanks for your feedback, Tes.

Have you tried traditional air purifiers with HEPA filters? You can find many recommendations in our Reviews category, but also feel free to ask any questions you have in the comments.

  8. Elly Gruber

I ordered one two weeks ago, and it still hasn’t arrived.

    • Milan Antonic

This is something many people have complained about. I think I should include this information in my review to inform potential buyers about the shipping issue.

Anyway, I recommend contacting Clarifion directly through their website for information about your order.

  9. Pablo

Hi, I’m from Uruguay (Southamerica) and need a gadget like you are offering but for 220 V. How I can get it in Amazon?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Pablo

    • Milan Antonic

      Hi Pablo,

I only reviewed the Clarifion air ionizer. I’m not the seller.

I believe you could contact Clarifion directly for that kind of information.

  10. Lisa Chambers

Hi! Thank you so much for this website and for helping so many of us as we try to make heads or tails of these products, mostly the good, the bad, and the ugly in a money-hungry world where you don’t know who you can trust!

Your commitment to being such an expert in the field is really respectable and I really want to thank you for what you do! ❤️

I’m looking for advice on the PuroAir air purifiers. First I’ll admit I’m only interested in this particular brand because I saw a “Best Air Purifiers of 2025” type article and it topped the list, then was also in 2 other of the top 10 spots with their other models. So first, is this a brand you would personally choose? If so, I’m looking at the 2 packs… in your opinion, is it worth purchasing the PuroAir 400 over the PuroAir 240 ($200 price difference on the 2-packs on Amazon)? I realize the 400 claims to cover up to 2000 sq ft while the 240 claims to cover up to 1000, but besides that selling point is there a difference in quality, function, etc that would make it worth paying more for the 400 when both would cover the room sizes just fine?

If there’s a brand/model you could recommend based on your experience and expertise around the same price point (<$250 per unit) I would love the recommendation, and then there’s no need to answer the above!

Thank you SO much for taking the time to read all of that, and thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and opinions!! I’m lost and confused and I have a little boy who is having trouble with his breathing and allergies. I really think this could help a lot! 💕

    Respectfully, Lisa

    • Milan Antonic

      Hi Lisa,

Thank you so much for your kind words—they truly mean a lot. I’m really glad the content here has been helpful to you, especially during such an important time for your family.

      To answer your question directly:
I haven’t personally tested any PuroAir air purifiers. I actually considered buying one for review, but after doing some research, I realized that the pricing seemed inflated and not well justified compared to other models on the market.

The “Best of 2025” type articles you mentioned are, in my opinion, most likely sponsored content. These lists are often created with affiliate or promotional intent, and the recommendations—especially when a single brand dominates several top spots—should be taken with a grain of salt.

It’s rarely the result of real hands-on testing.

For your budget, I would recommend:
Levoit Vital 100S – solid performance, good coverage, and proven reliability.
Winix A231 – compact, efficient, and great filtration for allergies.
Coway Airmega 100 – a newer model from a highly respected brand, ideal for small rooms.

All of these have undergone actual testing, and their performance and value are well-documented.

If you have any other questions or want help choosing based on your room size, location, or specific needs don’t hesitate to reach out again. I’ll be happy to help however I can.

Wishing the best to you and your little boy!

  11. Lori

I’m in Canada. I ordered and had them within days. Less than a week from order to receipt. I have a great air filter for my art studio (Mila) But I can’t put it in every room ( expensive and fan is fairly noisy). I got this product because I’m allergic to dust and we were cleaning out closets of old clothes etc in our house. I was suffering with constant sneezing and runny eyes. We put them in several different rooms. After 2 days the improvement is obvious. It’s small, completely quiet, affordable., portable. As long as you don’t expect it to do what an air filter, does it is a great product.

  12. Suzanne ANASTACIO

Hello thank you for your review of the Clarifion. I have in my home. Noticed a difference right away for eliminating urine smell. Now I’m concerned about the ozone issues. Is this harmful to my pet? I have 1 in the bathroom where the litter box is. 1 in living room and bedroom. I also use a regular Levoit HEPA air purifier. Does the HEPA filter work to rid of ozone?

    • Milan Antonic

Unfortunately, HEPA filters can’t remove ozone.

Ozone can be potentially harmful to pets, but only in large amounts. However, I don’t think you’ll have an issue with ozone, especially since you’re using your Clarifions in separate rooms.

  13. Pam Pergande

I ordered the Clarifion on February 11, 2025, and have not received it yet. I think this is a scam. They took my money, but I never received the product. Never buy from this company!

    • Milan Antonic

I’m really sorry to hear that you haven’t received the device you ordered. However, I’m just a reviewer, and this is a review, not a product page, so I can’t provide any information about your order. You’ll need to contact Clarifion directly for assistance.

Please consider leaving a follow-up comment once you receive a response from them or after resolving the issue—this could help others in a similar situation.

    • Wendy Whittaker

Possible reason for delay. Once it gets to Canada Customs it is held there until U pay to clear it thru.
I was not aware of this until I to was waiting. I would not purchase from this user again.
I will hold my review to see if the product is worth it.

      • Milan Antonic

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m sure it will be valuable to many others.

  14. TP Larkin

We’ve positioned several units around our home, full time plug ins-and we’ve not noticed any differences in furniture dusting or air quality.

There has been no buildup on the units nor on the carpet under them??

They’ve been plugged in for 4 months +.

    • Milan Antonic

The Clarifion ionizer doesn’t capture airborne particles but makes them settle on surfaces, so you may not see visible changes in dust accumulation unless you clean regularly.

Also, its effectiveness is limited, especially in larger spaces, and our performance tests showed only a 44% improvement in small rooms.

If you want better and real air quality improvement, then you will need an air purifier with a HEPA filter.

  15. Wes Taylor

Does this product help with dust mites

    • Milan Antonic

Yes, an ionizer could indirectly reduce dust mites, but it’s not the most effective solution.

  16. Mike

When you say periodically remove dirt and debris, are you referring to just wiping down the outside of the box? I unplugged mine and it has a darker spot around the outlet, possibly dust. How long do these last?

    • Milan Antonic

Yes, you should clean outside the box and inside the small slot on the side.

I’m not sure how long these last, but some sources say they can last between one and three years. It all depends on how often you use your Clarifion.

  17. Keith

Bought 6 a little over a year ago. They did absolutely nothing for helping with purification of our home. Ironically my allergies got worse. Two stopped working. Called customer service to no avail. Threw all of them out. Garbage product.

    • Milan Antonic

      I’m sorry to hear that.

In our performance tests, it also did almost nothing.

Thanks for sharing your experience; it will definitely help our readers!

    • Liz Donnelly

I’m very sorry to hear about your horrible disappointment by using the product Keith, someone introduced me about Coway Airmega air purifier and this will work properly and provide the service were been looking for. Even though it’s way more expensive tham Clarifion air ionizer but the service works as it advertised. We are very happy that we found what we really need.

      • Milan Antonic

Hi Liz, Coway is a reliable and trustworthy brand, and I’m 100% sure you’ll be satisfied with it! Thanks for commenting.

    • Sue

I’m sorry to hear that about your products not working…Please take the time to get your refund!! Don’t let them keep your hard earned money! I was about to order the 3 pack, but then I decided to check for reviews…I am truly disappointed with what happened to you, but now I know they’re not a good company nor do they sell good products… Thank you for your review!

  18. Annie Burg

Can someone tell me how to clean this thing?

    • Milan Antonic

In general, you don’t have to clean it, as it doesn’t use filters or any components that require cleaning.

However, you could periodically remove dirt and debris using a microfiber cloth.

  19. Pascal Jourdain

This device sends IONS into the air but does not control where they will settle. So in a bedroom, the ions with contaminants can end up on the bed and pillows or in a kitchen, they can end up on your countertop with food. To me this is a big problem since the contaminants can be breathed in or ingested this way. If you are looking for an Ionizer device, get one that controls fallout or is paired with a HEPA filter

    • Milan Antonic

Those are some great points! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  20. Bonnie hester

I want to try this item.

  21. Gretta H. Hall

Status of order 10-8-24: ordered 3 plug ins 36.97 each, what is status?

    • Milan Antonic

Hi, Air Purifier First is the website where we review air purifiers. For information such as order status and other similar details about the product, please visit the Clarifion website.

  22. Joann Yott

What is the length of time a plug in Clairion ionizer lasts?
I have five of them in an 1800 square feet home, is that too many?

    • Milan Antonic

I wouldn’t use that many Clarifions in my home, as these devices produce ozone. Instead, I would opt for traditional air purifiers. For the price of five Clarifion air ionizers, you could get one or two decent air purifiers.
