At first glance, comparing the Levoit Core 400S and Core 200S air purifiers might seem unfair, especially since the Core 400S is a much larger and more powerful device.
However, because I’ve received many questions about these two models—such as how they perform and which one is the better buy—I decided to compare them and help potential buyers make a decision.
The Levoit Core 200S is a compact air purifier designed for rooms up to 183 sq. ft. (17 m²), while the Levoit Core 400S is built for much larger spaces, covering rooms of up to 403 sq. ft. (37 m²). Both devices can clean the air 4.8 times per hour in rooms of their recommended sizes.
As for filtration technology, there aren’t many differences aside from the size of the filters. The Core 400S not only uses a larger filter but also one that lasts significantly longer. Both models feature a three-stage filtration system.
When it comes to advanced features, the Core 400S has much more to offer. However, instead of listing every specification individually, I’ve created a table with a detailed side-by-side comparison of these two devices’ specifications.
Our Verdict

By simply reading the specifications table below, it’s clear that the Levoit Core 400S is far superior, more powerful, and undoubtedly the better choice for most buyers.
It stands out with better overall performance, a higher CADR, larger and longer-lasting filters, plenty of advanced features, a more efficient motor, and an excellent price-to-quality ratio.
That said, I wouldn’t ignore the Core 200S entirely. It’s a great option for smaller spaces, such as compact bedrooms, especially since it’s one of the quietest air purifiers I’ve tested and includes a nice night light feature.

Performance Test – Comparison
The first thing I want to highlight about performance is that the Levoit Core 200S is a much less powerful device compared to the Core 400S.
The Core 200S has a CADR of just 118 CFM (200.6 m³/h), which makes it suitable for rooms up to 183 sq. ft. (17 m²). In contrast, the Levoit Core 400S can handle much larger spaces, covering rooms up to 403 sq. ft. (37 m²).
Particle Removal Tests - Comparison
We placed the Levoit Core 200S and Levoit Core 400S in two separate tests and measured their performance using the Temtop laser particle meter.
We tested both devices in rooms close to their recommended sizes, and the good news is that they both delivered outstanding results.
As shown in the chart above, the Levoit Core 200S improved air quality by 91% in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room, while the Levoit Core 400S achieved an impressive 96% improvement in a 320 sq. ft. (30 m²) room.
It’s clear that the Core 400S is significantly more powerful, more efficient, and overall a stronger performer.
Smoke Box Test – Comparison
We tested the performance of these two air purifiers in removing smoke from a glass box.
Given the Levoit Core 400S’s much higher CADR and larger filter, I expected it to perform significantly faster in this test, and it didn’t disappoint.

The Core 400S cleared all the smoke from the glass box in just 15 seconds, which is one of the best results we’ve recorded among all the air purifiers we’ve tested so far.
In comparison, the Levoit Core 200S took 32 seconds. While that’s still a respectable result, it doesn’t come close to the impressive performance of the Core 400S.
Noise Level Test – Comparison
The Levoit Core 400S is a smart device that, in addition to its five fan speeds, features an auto mode that works in combination with an air quality sensor.
In contrast, the Levoit Core 200S offers four fan speeds and lacks an auto mode.
What’s surprising is that both devices are impressively optimized for noise, even at their maximum speeds. The Core 400S produces just 59.9 dBA at the highest setting, while the Core 200S measures slightly quieter at 53.9 dBA.
Noise Levels - Comparison
Comparison of noise levels at all fan speeds between the Levoit Core 200S and Levoit Core 400S air purifiers.
It’s important to note, however, that the Core 400S has a much higher CADR, which explains why it’s a little louder at full speed.
At their lowest speeds, both models are equally quiet, producing just 41.2 dBA.
| Fan Speed | Levoit Core 200S (dBA) | Levoit Core 400S (dBA) |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep Mode | 42.1 dBA | 42.1 dBA |
| Speed 1 (Low) | 44.9 dBA | 43.6 dBA |
| Speed 2 (Medium) | 48.5 dBA | 47.8 dBA |
| Speed 3 (High) | 53.9 dBA | 55.4 dBA |
| Speed 4 (Turbo) | - | 59.9 dBA |
While the numbers suggest the Core 200S is quieter overall, I would still choose the Core 400S because it’s one of the quietest air purifiers at maximum speed when factoring in its superior noise-to-CADR ratio.
Operating Costs – Comparison
When it comes to operating costs, you might expect the Levoit Core 400S to consume significantly more power due to its larger size, more powerful motor, larger filter, and higher CADR.
However, it surprisingly uses almost the same power as the Core 200S. The Core 400S is equipped with a 38W motor, while the Core 200S uses a 37W motor.
This means that if you were to run both devices 24 hours a day at maximum speed for an entire month, your electricity bill would increase by approximately $3.06 for the Core 400S and around $2.16 for the Core 200S.
Monthly Power Consumption Cost - Comparison
Comparison of monthly power consumption costs for the Levoit Core 200S and Levoit Core 400S air purifiers at all fan speeds.
Refer to the chart or table provided for a detailed breakdown of power usage at all fan speeds.
In addition to electricity costs, there’s also the expense of replacement filters. The Core 200S filter is slightly cheaper, but the Core 400S filter lasts longer.
| Fan Speed | Levoit Core 200S (W + $/month) | Levoit Core 400S (W + $/month) |
|---|---|---|
| Standby | 0.6W ($0.05) | 0.9W ($0.07) |
| Sleep Mode | 12.7W ($1.11) | 3.3W ($0.28) |
| Speed 1 (Low) | 16.8W ($1.47) | 5.8W ($0.5) |
| Speed 2 (Medium) | 19.5W ($1.71) | 8.8W ($0.77) |
| Speed 3 (High) | 24.6W ($2.16) | 16.1W ($1.41) |
| Speed 4 (Turbo) | - | 35W ($3.06) |
Combined with its better-optimized motor and superior power-to-CADR ratio, the Core 400S proves to be more cost-effective to maintain annually.

Hello, if you have pets, would you recommend 200s or 400s?
Thank you
The Core 400S. Why? Because It has a much better filter and larger airflow, which is necessary to deal with pet hair, pet dander, and bad smells.
However, why wouldn’t you check out the Levoit Vital 200S? It’s my new favorite air purifier and also an extraordinary option for pets.
