Best Car Air Purifiers (And Why Most People Don’t Need One)

Awareness of air quality is very important in the modern world, and I support anyone who decides to buy an air purifier.

That doesn’t mean every air purifier is good or that you can realistically use an air purifier in every possible situation throughout the day.

For example, wearable air purifiers, which are mostly ionizers, are unnecessary in my opinion and a complete miss. Wearing a mask makes far more sense.

But what about small, tiny air purifiers for cars? How effective are they? Are they actually needed, and does it make sense to buy an air purifier for your car? These are some of the questions I’ll answer in this guide.

Best Air Purifiers for Cars

Frankly, I haven’t tested many car air purifiers, and the market for these small devices isn’t very developed either.

The real need for car air purifiers is minimal, which is why most manufacturers don’t seriously enter this segment.

However, one model I haven’t tested but genuinely believe could be a good option is the IQAir Atem Car. Still, until I buy it and test it thoroughly, I can’t say much more.

In most cases, your cabin air filter matters far more. However, in specific situations, a car air purifier can help. One of those situations is if you often drive with kids.

For most drivers, regularly replacing the cabin air filter is far more important than buying a car air purifier.

Medify MA-CAR – Best Air Purifier for Cars

Among all the car air purifiers we tested, the Medify MA-CAR performed the best. It has the highest CADR, isn’t too large, and delivered acceptable results in our tests, especially considering how small the device is.

While it doesn’t offer any smart or advanced features, it includes three fan speeds, a low-power motor, and straps for attaching the device to a car seat.

At maximum speed, it produces 56.2 dBA, which isn’t overly noisy, especially in a car environment.

In our performance tests, it didn’t achieve outstanding results, but the performance was acceptable for use in a small space such as a car.

It uses four-stage filtration technology, including a pre-filter, HEPA filter, activated carbon filter, and an ionizer.

The filter itself is very small, which means it needs to be replaced every 3 to 4 months. It’s also important not to expect miracles when it comes to neutralizing strong odors or smoke, as the filter contains a relatively small amount of activated carbon.

Philips GoPure 5212 – Great Alternative

Another good option for cars is the Philips GoPure 5212 air purifier. It’s slightly smaller and less powerful than the Medify MA-CAR, but it’s still worth considering and makes a solid choice for car use.

It has a much lower CADR of just 6.5 CFM (11 m³/h) and uses two-stage filtration technology. However, it consumes less power and is better optimized for noise than the Medify MA-CAR.

At maximum speed, the Philips GoPure 5212 produces only 53.6 dBA. It doesn’t offer any smart features, doesn’t work with a smart app, and doesn’t include an air quality sensor.

Overall, it’s a reasonably good option for airborne particle removal inside a car, but just like the Medify MA-CAR, it won’t make any significant difference when it comes to neutralizing bad odors.

The filter for this device lasts up to three months. The good news is that there are plenty of third-party filter options available, which are significantly cheaper than the original filter.

What is my general opinion of car air purifiers?

Frankly, I don’t think small car air purifiers can be compared to home air purifiers.

Small filters, very low CADR, and low power are the main reasons these devices are inferior and only marginally effective in cars.

Some people expect that if they smoke in the car, a car air purifier will absorb all the cigarette smoke. The short answer is no, it won’t. A very small filter with little or no activated carbon has no real chance of adsorbing smoke from the air.

Another common issue is that people decide to buy a car air purifier but skip regular cabin air filter replacements during scheduled vehicle services. I always say this: regularly replacing the cabin air filter is far more important than buying a car air purifier.

That said, I can’t say these devices don’t work at all. On the contrary, during heavy winter smog, I’ve noticed that using a car air purifier does clean the air to some extent and makes the cabin feel noticeably more comfortable.

So it’s not that car air purifiers don’t work, it’s just that I don’t see high value in buying one at any cost. Exceptions would be people who are allergic to pollen or particularly sensitive to smog, in which case a car air purifier can be a reasonable choice.

They can also make sense for professional use, such as for Uber drivers, taxi drivers, or truck drivers who spend many hours in their vehicles. For most people who don’t spend that much time in a car, I don’t think buying a car air purifier is necessary.

Strictly avoid ionizers. These devices won’t provide any meaningful benefit to air quality inside your car.

Final Conclusion

For most people, a high-quality cabin air filter is enough. However, a car air purifier can be a great addition if you spend a lot of time in your vehicle or live in an area with slow traffic and heavily polluted air.

Out of all the car air purifiers I’ve tested, I currently recommend only the two listed in this guide. The others aren’t worth mentioning, either because they use extremely small filters or are simply too weak to have any meaningful impact on air quality.
