I tested the well-known PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor air quality monitor to evaluate its accuracy, reliability, and whether it is worth buying.

The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor excels at tracking changes in PM2.5 particulate matter, and in this regard, it performs extremely well.

It uses the well-known Plantower PMS1003 sensor, which responds quickly to changes in air quality and provides consistent, reliable data.

Where the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor falls short is usability. The device relies only on an LED indicator to display air quality, with no built-in screen or smart app.

To access detailed data, users must rely on the PurpleAir web platform, API, or local network access, all of which require a higher level of technical comfort than most indoor air quality monitors.

If you are considering this device, I strongly recommend looking at the newer PurpleAir Touch, which is better built, more advanced, and a significant overall upgrade.

However, if ease of use, clear data visualization, or additional sensors such as CO2 are important to you, there are more practical alternatives on the market.

What do we really like?

  • Real-time visibility of air quality data on the PurpleAir map, with the option to share your data publicly.

  • By purchasing the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor, you can contribute to global air quality awareness by sharing data from your local sensor.

  • Read PM2.5 trends through the PurpleAir live map. You can add your sensor to the map and set it to private mode so only you can view the data.

  • A built-in fan improves airflow through the sensor, making measurements more efficient and reliable than those from static sensors.

  • Uses the Plantower PMS-1003 sensor, one of the most widely used and well-studied particulate matter sensors on the market.

  • Manufacturer-specified accuracy in detecting PM2.5 particulate matter: ±10 µg/mÂł (0 to 100 µg/mÂł) and ±10% (100 to 500 µg/mÂł).

What could be better?

  • I would rate it much higher if it had a smart app. The LED indicator on the device isn’t sufficient for determining precise, real-time air quality.

  • This is a legacy model and is no longer widely sold or actively promoted by PurpleAir.

You have probably already come across the PurpleAir brand, especially during the winter months when air quality becomes a hot topic. PurpleAir is well known for its interactive air quality map, with sensors installed all around the world.

In this article, I will be reviewing their indoor unit, the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor.

This compact air quality monitor features a distinctive design and comes with a number of pros and cons. How reliable it truly is, and who it is best suited for, are questions I will answer throughout this review.

Sensor Types & Accuracy

The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor uses a single Plantower PMS1003 laser particulate sensor, and an onboard sensor for temperature, humidity, and pressure.

The PMS1003 is a widely used, laser-based particulate matter sensor found in many consumer air quality monitors. While it isn’t a reference-grade sensor, it’s well-studied and widely used in consumer air quality monitors.

Like most Plantower sensors, it tends to slightly overestimate particulate levels at higher concentrations and underreport at very low concentrations. However, it performs very well when it comes to tracking PM2.5 trends and relative changes over time.

In practice, this means the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor excels at showing when air quality worsens or improves, such as during cooking, ventilation, or outdoor pollution events. It reacts quickly to changes, thanks in part to its built-in fan, which ensures consistent airflow across the sensor.

The PMS1003 measures PM2.5 particles in a range of 0 to 500 μg/m³, with an accuracy of ±10 μg/m³ from 0 to 100 μg/m³ and ±10% from 100 to 500 μg/m³.

Temperature, humidity, and pressure are measured by a separate onboard environmental sensor.

The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor doesn’t measure VOC.

It doesn’t have a CO2 sensor, which is something that has become increasingly common in indoor air quality monitors and is often more actionable for day-to-day indoor air quality management.

However, if you also want CO2 monitoring, I would recommend the SwitchBot CO2 Monitor or the INKBIRD model, as both are budget-friendly and highly accurate.

Measured Data Reporting

Data presentation is the weakest aspect of the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor. Similar to many PurpleAir models, the PA-I-Indoor has no built-in screen or dedicated app. Data viewing requires the PurpleAir online map, API access, or a local IP interface.

While the PurpleAir map is extremely powerful, it was originally designed for outdoor monitoring. As a result, using it for indoor-only monitoring can feel clunky, especially when compared to devices that offer simple dashboards or built-in displays.

However, if you are already familiar with the PurpleAir ecosystem, the platform offers excellent flexibility, detailed filtering options, and reliable long-term data access. For technically inclined users, this can be a strength rather than a drawback.

Personally, I would choose a model like the Qingping Gen 2 or a similar device, which not only uses high-quality sensors but also provides a clear and user-friendly way to view air quality data.

Setup and Installation

To set up the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor, you need to connect the device to your local Wi-Fi network. This enables access to real-time readings for temperature, particulate matter, atmospheric pressure, humidity, and all other data the monitor provides.

I won’t go into a detailed explanation of the setup process here, as it’s already well covered in PurpleAir’s official documentation, which I link to here.

In addition to standard data access, developers can also use the PurpleAir API to retrieve sensor data in a more advanced way. It’s important to note that API access requires paid tokens. However, PurpleAir does provide a limited number of free tokens to new accounts, which is generally fine for personal use.

Cleaning & Calibrating

The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor uses the Plantower PMS-1003 sensor, which comes factory-calibrated by the manufacturer and don’t require manual calibration.

However, there are a few procedures you should follow to ensure the most accurate readings.

When you first power on the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor, it is a good idea to let it run continuously for at least 24–72 hours. This allows the Plantower PMS-1003 sensor to fully stabilize.

Regular cleaning of the device is also recommended. Vacuuming the unit, or otherwise removing dust buildup from inside the housing, helps maintain accurate and reliable air quality readings over time.

Design & Build Quality

Frankly, the plastic used on the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor looks like it was 3D printed, especially since I have hands-on experience using a 3D printer. I even mentioned using the printer in my guide on the best air purifiers for 3D printing.

However, I wasn’t able to find any official information confirming that the PurpleAir base is actually 3D printed. However, during my research, I found that many users share the same impression.

In terms of build quality, it isn’t premium in the sense that the plastic doesn’t feel modern or refined. However, the material itself is very hard and robust, and I’m sure that it will not show noticeable wear or damage even after several years of use.

Aside from that, there is not much else to say about the build quality.

Airflow

The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor has air intake openings on the bottom of the device, making it the first air quality monitor I have tested that draws in air this way.

What is interesting is that this is the only opening, meaning air circulates inside the device and then exits through the same openings.

What comes with the device?

The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor comes with only the essentials needed to get started. Inside the box, you will find the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor indoor air quality monitor and a USB to Micro USB cable, approximately 1 m or 3.2 ft long, used to power the device.

A wall power adapter is not included, so you will need to use your own standard 5 V USB charger, such as a phone adapter.

FAQ on PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor

Does the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor show air quality directly on the device?

Not in a way that displays exact values. The device has a built-in LED indicator that changes color based on the current air quality.

Does it have a smart app for reading the data?

The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor doesn’t have a built-in screen for detailed graphs or historical data. To view real-time and past readings, you must connect the device to your Wi-Fi network and access the data through the PurpleAir real-time map or web platform.

Does the PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor measure CO2 or formaldehyde?

No. The PurpleAir PA-I-Indoor doesn’t include a CO2 sensor.

Do I need a separate power adapter?

The package includes a USB to Micro USB cable, but no wall power adapter is included. You will need a suitable 5 V USB power adapter to run the device.
