RATING

The MOOKA B-D02L is an affordable air purifier that has quickly gained popularity and received plenty of positive reviews. While its price is a huge advantage, there are some drawbacks that potential buyers should consider.

For instance, the MOOKA B-D02L lacks clear information on its CADR values, and although the manufacturer claims it covers rooms up to 215 sq. ft. (20 m²), I believe this may be an overestimate for its capabilities.

Additionally, its performance results were below average. However, it’s a very quiet device with a well-optimized motor and affordable replacement filters.

In my opinion, there are better air purifiers available on the market that don’t cost much more than the MOOKA B-D02L. I recommend considering the Levoit Core 200S, the Winix A231, or the Blueair Mini Max.

If you have any questions about the MOOKA B-D02L, feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

Full Review

MOOKA is a relatively new brand on the market, offering a range of mostly small air purifiers.

Until now, I hadn’t tried any MOOKA air purifiers, and the first model I decided to buy and test was the MOOKA B-D02L. While it may not be the best model MOOKA offers, it is definitely one of their best-selling devices.

One concern I have with newer Chinese brands like MOOKA is the lack of transparency, which is evident here as well.

One of the most important specifications for an air purifier is the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate), typically determined and verified by Energy Star or a similar certified organization. The MOOKA brand isn’t listed on Energy Star, which makes it a bit harder to confirm their claim of a CADR of 135 CFM (230 m³/h).

Now, let’s dive into the test results and specifications analysis to assess how well the MOOKA air purifier performs and whether it’s worth buying.

How We Tested the MOOKA B-D02L?

1. For the filter efficiency testing, we used the Temtop LKC-1000S laser particle meter, which measures PM2.5 (µg/m3), PM10 (µg/m3), Particles (per/L), and HCHO (mg/m3) in the air, and also calculates the AQI.

2. We placed the MOOKA B-D02L in two separate performance tests, one in a 120 sq. ft. (11 m²) room and the other in 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room. Then, we recorded the initial air quality values using the Temtop laser particle meter and let the MOOKA B-D02L run at maximum speed.

3. After 60 minutes, we measured the new values using the Temtop laser particle meter and saved the data.

4. Next, we placed the MOOKA B-D02L in a glass box, which we then filled with smoke. Then, we measured how much time was needed for the air purifier to remove all the smoke from the box.

5. Using a special noise measurement tool, we tested the air purifier’s noise level at all speeds. We measured the noise level on the dBA scale.

6. Finally, we measured the power usage at all speeds using an energy meter, after which we calculated how much it would cost to use the device at a particular fan speed for one month. For reference, we used an energy price of $0.12 per kWh.

Performance – Particle Removal Tests

As mentioned at the beginning of this review, I believe the MOOKA air purifier is suitable for much smaller spaces than the manufacturer claims, which may have contributed to slightly weaker results in our performance tests.

According to the manufacturer, the MOOKA B-D02L has a CADR of 135 CFM (230 m³/h), which they claim is suitable for rooms up to 215 sq. ft. (20 m²). However, since I feel the MOOKA air purifier isn’t ideal for spaces of that size, we tested it in two rooms smaller than the recommended area.

Additionally, I used the MOOKA air purifier on my desk for a week and noticed it does improve air quality, though not as significantly as some slightly larger air purifiers.

Testing in a 120 sq. ft. (11 m²) Room

In the first test, we placed the MOOKA B-D02L in a 120 sq. ft. (11 m²) room to measure how much it could improve air quality over 60 minutes while operating at maximum speed.

It successfully reduced PM2.5 particulate matter from 100 to 12.1 µg/m³, achieving an air quality improvement of approximately 87%.

# Starting Baseline After 60 min
PM 2.5 100 µg/m³ 12.1 µg/m³
PM 10 140 µg/m³ 17 µg/m³
Particles 145010 per/L 17689 per/L
AQI 131 17

For comparison, a similar air purifier, the Blueair Mini Max, improved air quality by 92% in the same room.

Particle Removal Test Room - Comparison

Comparison between the MOOKA B-D02L and its competitors in particle removal tests in a 120 sq. ft. (11 m²) room.

Many other air purifiers also outperformed the MOOKA, though some had lower results. For instance, the Aroeve MK01 improved air quality by 86% in this test, while the Levoit LV-H126 improved it by 85%.

Take a look at the chart above for a clear comparison.

Testing in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) Room

In the second test, we used the MOOKA air purifier in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room.

# Starting Baseline After 60 min
PM 2.5 105.6 µg/m³ 19.5 µg/m³
PM 10 147.8 µg/m³ 27.4 µg/m³
Particles 153131 per/L 28379 per/L
AQI 138 26

After 60 minutes at maximum speed, the MOOKA B-D02L improved air quality by 81%. Although this is a weaker result than in the previous test, it’s important to remember that this room is significantly larger than the one used in the first test.

9.4

Noise Levels Test

Before moving on to the detailed noise level test results, I want to note that the MOOKA B-D02L has four fan speeds: sleep mode, low mode, medium mode, and high mode.

It’s very quiet at the lower speeds. In sleep mode, it produces only 40.7 dBA, making it one of the quietest air purifiers we’ve tested. By comparison, the Levoit LV-H132 is much louder at its lowest speed, producing 43.1 dBA.

Noise Levels Test - Comparison

This chart compares the noise levels at the minimum and maximum speeds of the MOOKA B-D02L air purifier with those of its competitors.

At maximum speed, the noise level is slightly higher but still well below many similar air purifiers, registering at 61.1 dBA.

Please refer to the table below for noise levels at other speeds.

Fan Speed MOOKA B-D02L (dBA)
Sleep Mode40.7 dBA
Speed 1 (Low)45.9 dBA
Speed 2 (Medium)52.2 dBA
Speed 3 (High)61.1 dBA

Overall, the MOOKA B-D02L is a quiet air purifier, making it ideal for bedrooms, office desks, and similar spaces.

9.2

Operating Costs – Power Usage Test & Filter Price

Small devices like the MOOKA are typically very small power consumers; in fact, their power consumption is often negligible.

A motor. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

The MOOKA B-D02L uses a 16W motor, which may even be slightly higher than expected for a device of this size. At maximum speed, it consumes 15W, which means that using it 24 hours a day over a month would add about $1.32 to your electricity bill. This isn’t a huge cost when compared to the power use costs of some similar air purifiers (refer to the chart below).

Monthly Power Cost – Comparison

Comparison of the monthly power cost at maximum speed between the MOOKA B-D02L and some of its competitors.

In addition to electricity costs, there is also the cost of replacement filters, which need to be changed approximately every 3–6 months. However, I find the price of replacement filters for such a small air purifier somewhat higher than expected.

Fan Speed MOOKA B-D02L (W + $/month)
Standby1.2W ($0.11)
Sleep Mode2.8W ($0.25)
Speed 1 (Low)5.1W ($0.45)
Speed 2 (Medium)8W ($0.7)
Speed 3 (High)15W ($1.32)

All in all, when adding up the costs of electricity and replacement filters, it’s clear that the MOOKA B-D02L is very affordable to maintain on an annual basis.

Filtration Technology

The MOOKA B-D02L air purifier has a small filter located in the bottom part of the device.

It features three layers of filtration: a pre-filter, a True HEPA filter, and an activated carbon filter.

Although the filter is quite small, it delivered okay results in our performance tests. However, it tends to get dirty quickly and may need to be replaced more frequently than recommended.

Always buy genuine filters for the best performance. As soon as the filter reset indicator is on, you are ready to change filters. Do it as quickly as possible.

Check Filter Price On Amazon

Pre-filter

The pre-filter is the first stage of filtration. It’s a nylon mesh filter attached to the HEPA filter, designed primarily to capture large particles.

This helps extend the HEPA filter’s life and enhances the air purifier’s overall efficiency.

True HEPA Filter

The second and most important filtration stage in this air purifier is the True HEPA filter, which is designed to capture small particles such as airborne dust, pollen, smoke, and similar pollutants.

This stage is crucial for the overall performance of the MOOKA air purifier.

Activated Carbon Filter

The MOOKA B-D02L uses an activated carbon filter as the final filtration stage.

It uses a fibrous filter coated with carbon instead than a pellet-based carbon filter, which is primarily why the MOOKA performed poorly in our odor and smoke neutralization tests.

How to Replace the MOOKA Air Purifier Filter?

The MOOKA B-D02L doesn’t use a washable filter, so it needs to be replaced periodically.

The filter typically requires replacement every three to six months, which could mean up to four replacements per year.

The replacement process is straightforward and involves just a few simple steps.

Besides, I recommend cleaning the pre-filter at least every two weeks, either with a vacuum cleaner on a low setting or, ideally, with a dry cloth.

Setup and Installation

The MOOKA air purifier comes pre-assembled, but there are a few steps to complete before first use.

The most important step is to open the bottom cover, remove the filter, unwrap it from the plastic packaging, and place it back inside.

Once this step is complete, your MOOKA is ready to use. Place it in your desired location, ensuring airflow is not blocked, then plug it in and turn it on.

The MOOKA air purifier remembers the last fan speed and night light setting used in the event of a power outage, making it suitable for use with a smart plug.

Design

This is a small, portable air purifier with a cylindrical shape, controls on the top and front, and air inlets at the bottom.

The MOOKA B-D02L is made of good-quality plastic and is well-crafted, though I wouldn’t describe it as a premium-built air purifier.

It comes in either white or black, giving you options to choose the color that best fits your space.

While it lacks carrying handles, the MOOKA is lightweight and easy to move, so I don’t see this as a significant drawback.

Overall, the MOOKA is an attractive air purifier that, I’m sure, will complement almost any setting.

Display and Controls

This air purifier doesn’t have a traditional display; instead, it has LED indicators on the front that show which features are active.
