Hathaspace HSP001 Air Purifier – Hands-on Review (2023)

Hathaspace is a brand that focuses only on air purifiers. They are currently offering two models. For a long time, the Hathaspace HSP001 was the only model available for purchase.

I decided to test this device because it is popular among users and has outstanding ratings in all markets. Hathaspace HSP001 uses 5-stage filtration in combination with an ionizer. As an advanced option, this model uses a smart sensor that works in combination with other advanced functions. The Hathaspace HSP001 air purifier does not have a smart app, but it has a remote controller that replaces the app.

Hathaspace HSP001 Air Purifier
I placed the Hathaspace HSP001 in my living room.

Honestly, I expected this device to be a little bigger because the pictures give the impression that it is much bigger than it is. It is recommended that Hathaspace HSP001 is used in rooms up to 350 sq. ft. How good it really is, and whether it will do the job properly, read in the review below.

Hathaspace HSP001 is a great air purifier with large filters and intense airflow. But above all, the design is what will surprise you at first look. It just looks good and, because of that, will fit in any environment.

Beneath a good look is a 5-in-1 purification system that will ensure the room’s air is at top quality as long as the Hathspace HSP001 is running. Suppose you buy the product directly from Hathaspace. In that case, you get the possibility of a return within 60 days, as well as great discounts and benefits.

Design

The Hathaspace HSP001 comes in white color, with black details on the front and sides. The device is slightly rounded at the edges. On the front is the display. Below the display are the device control buttons. Hathaspace HSP001 is not available in different colors.

The plastic could be of a little better quality, but that’s not a big problem with this type of device. However, in my opinion, a higher quality plastic would make the HSP001 leave a premium impression. The designers also thought about moving the device from location to location; you can use the transfer handle.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Air Purifier - Design
The Hathaspace HSP001 is placed in the front of the office desk.

In my opinion, this device’s elegance is given by some small details, such as the design of the front cover and the look of the Hathaspace logo, which fits perfectly into the design. I had no problem fitting this device into any environment. Wherever I placed it, it looked neutral and did not attract unnecessary attention.

Display

The display is located on the front, near the device’s top. It shows all the information you need. It shows fan speed, timer, anion, sleep, light, and air quality indicators. All indicators light up differently, making the display completely clear and readable.

By the way, I don’t like the display on the front, which I already mentioned as one of the bigger flaws when I did the review of the Afloia Mage air purifier. However, with the Hathaspace HSP001, the display is so well aligned with the buttons that I have no complaints or problems when controlling the device.

Control Buttons

Just below the display are the controls, arranged in two rows. The buttons are intuitive, lightly pressed, and respond to pressure quite well.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Air Purifier Control Buttons

A beep is heard each time the button is pressed. The control panel buttons are power, timer, fan speed, sleep, anion, and light buttons.

Airflow

The way the Hathapace HSP001 pulls the air in and filters it is nothing innovative. It is similar to other products that are identical in construction.

Hathaspace HSP001 draws air from the front through openings on the sides and bottom. After that, the air is filtered through all filtration stages and through the ionizer (if it is turned on) and exits through the grilles on the device’s upper side.

Place the air purifier in a dry, stable place, and keep it at least 8 inches away from other objects.

Size and Dimensions

The air purifier weighs about 12 lb. The dimensions of the device are 13.5 x 7 x 19.5 inches. When you look at the device in the pictures, you will think it is bigger, while it is an entirely different story in reality. The Hathaspace HSP001 is not a dimensionally large device.

What’s in the box?

When you buy the device, you get a Hathaspace HSP001 air purifier, filters set, remote controller, warranty card, and User Manual. The device comes fully packaged and protected.

Before starting it for the first time, be sure to remove the filters from the packaging to avoid possible damage.

Hathaspace HSP001 Air Purifier Video Review

Hathspace HSP001 did not disappoint me. Great performance with advanced technology puts this air purifier on everyone’s wish list. A perfect and modern design allows you to put this device in any room without any decor flaws. I hope you enjoy this video and like my presentation about this new but great air purifier.

Features Overview

Hathaspace HSP001 has many fancy features. Some of the advanced features are very useful and will help you keep the room clean. The HSP001 offers many possibilities in this price range, which is not very common with competing air purifiers.

Air Quality Sensor

The Hathaspace HSP001 uses an air quality sensor to determine the current room air quality. What caught my eye was the location of the sensor. Most devices position this sensor on the side or rear. In Hathaspace, the sensor is under the cover on the front, more precisely in the lower-left corner. I think this is an excellent position for the sensor because the device has the strongest air intake in that part. It can always determine the current air quality without any problems.

Hathaspace HSP001 Air Purifier - Smart Sensor
Air quality sensor lights in three different colors.

Sensor readings are shown on display on the front of the device.

One or all three colors are shown on display, depending on the current air quality. If only green is displayed, air quality is good. If yellow is also visible, the air quality is moderate. And if red is also on display, the air quality is terrible.

The sensor on the Hathaspace HSP001 is accurate, which befits a device like this. This sensor detects particles in real time. It is much more advanced than some competing devices I’ve tested, such as the Winix C535 or Winix 5500-2.

Auto Mode

Auto Mode is an exciting option that works in combination with the air quality sensor. When Hathaspace is switched to auto mode, it will automatically change the fan speed depending on the current air quality.

If the air quality is good, auto mode will switch to low speed. If the air quality is moderate, fan speed will be automatically changed to medium speed. If the air quality is very poor, the device will work at the highest speed.

Remote Controller

The Hathaspace HSP001 comes with one interesting addition: a remote controller. The remote controller is plastic, as ordinary as all other remote controllers you may have in the house. It also comes without batteries. The device requires two AAA batteries.

Hathaspace HSP001 Air Purifier - Remote Controller
A very practical remote controller.

You can completely control the Hathaspace HSP001 air purifier with the remote controller. Available buttons on the remote controller are power, timer, speed, sleep, light, and anion. As you can see, the same controls are on the air purifier itself. I’ve noticed that the remote controller sometimes doesn’t respond, mostly if I’m away from the device. Hence, it’s best to always point it at the device while pressing the buttons and not move too far away.

Timer

Hathaspace HSP001 offers an attractive timer option. The timer is set by pressing the timer button. As soon as you press the button, you will see the correct time when the air purifier will shut down automatically.

It is possible to set the time to an interval between 1h and 12h.

Sleep Mode

Hathaspace HSP001 uses sleep mode. However, when switched to sleep mode, the device does not further reduce fan speed but only switches to low speed. Also, all indicator lights on the device shut down.

In my opinion, it would be much better if the fan speed was further reduced, and thus this would be a real sleep mode. What’s good is that the Hathaspace HSP001 is pretty quiet at the first speed, so in terms of volume, that too will be enough, especially for people who plan to use the device in the bedroom.

Since sleep mode does not reduce fan speed further, you will get the same effect as with sleep mode by switching the speed to low and pressing the light button.

Ionizer

Many people are suspicious and run away from devices that use ionizers.

Hathaspace uses an ionizer, but there is one great thing about it, and that is that you can turn the ionizer on or off whenever you want. More precisely, you don’t have to use it at all if you don’t want to. I will write more about this option in the section about filtration.

Room Coverage and CADR Ratings

Hathaspace, on the presentation site, claims that HSP001 can clean a room of 700 sq. ft. twice in one hour. In my opinion, this model is not that strong, and I would not recommend buying it if you plan to use it in such a large room. My claims are confirmed by the fact that the Hathasace HSP001 has a very low CADR, at 94 CFM (160 m3 / h).

Nevertheless, Hathaspace claims that this product works best in rooms up to 350 sq. ft. This is somewhat in line with the tests I did, and my recommendation is to use this model in rooms around 350 sq. ft. or smaller to get the best results.

So, basically, the Hathaspace HSP001 will fit best in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, or any other room that is under 350 sq. ft.

The device is not strong enough to continually maintain a high air quality level in a room of 700 sq. ft.

Filtration Technology

Hathaspace HSP001 uses 5-in-1 filtration in combination with an ionizer.

Hathaspace HSP001 Air Purifier - Filtration
I pulled all the filters out of the device.

The filter is located on the front, just below the cover. It is important to note that the filters are not washable and that they should never be in contact with water. You should occasionally use a keyboard duster to gently remove any physical debris, such as lint and hair.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Replacement Filter

Hathaspace HSP001 Replacement Filter

Hathaspace offers a filter club option, where it sends you a replacement filter to your home address every four months. In addition to these and many other benefits, if you are a member of the filter club, you get an extended warranty on the product for 5 years.

Essentially the Hathaspace air purifier consists of two separate filters. The first is a combination of cold catalysts and activated carbon filters. The second is a combination of antibacterial and true HEPA filters.

Cold Catalyst Filter

Cold Catalyst Filter is the first stage of filtration; it targets and removes large particles, including but not limited to dust mites, pet hair, skin cells, and mold spores. It also removes VOCs and toxic household chemicals like formaldehyde, ammonia, and benzene.

Activated Carbon Filter

This is the second stage of filtration. Activated carbon filter consume and remove smoke, smells, gases, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in household products.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Activated Carbon Filter
Activated carbon filter.

Each carbon filter contains 300 grams of high-grade active carbon, which means that the filter can adsorb many harmful substances. Hathaspace HSP001 uses carbon pellets, which are arranged similar to honeycombs.

In my opinion, the pellets are very densely arranged, and there are quite enough of them. This is commendable, as I’ve noticed that manufacturers often save on carbon filters.

Antibacterial Filter

The antibacterial filter is the third stage of filtration. In essence, these are nano-materials whose primary purpose is to adsorb bacteria and germs.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Antibacterial Filter
Antibacterial filter.

In essence, this filter also serves as a pre-filter, thus protecting the true HEPA filter from large particles such as dust, pet hair, and lint.

True HEPA filter

The fourth stage of filtration is the true HEPA filter. In my opinion, this is the essential degree of filtration and perhaps even the most important. It removes 99.97% of airborne pollutants in the air as small as 0.3 microns like dust, pollen, and pet dander.

Hathaspace HSP001 - True HEPA filter
True HEPA filter.

Ionizer (Anion Mode)

The last, fifth stage of filtration is the ionizer. This option is arbitrary. The ionizer is activated at the request of the user.

Hathaspace is CARB certified, which means that it is tested and safe to use. When the ionizer is on, negative ions are released, small particles with extra electrons. These ions eliminate odors, smoke, and gases in the air. It also makes tiny particles easy to capture.

How to replace the Hathaspace HSP001 filter?

Hathaspace, like many other air purifiers, requires maintenance and filter replacement. However, Hathaspace does not have a built-in filter reset indicator, one of the major drawbacks that I would single out on this device. Therefore, you will be forced to keep track of when to replace the filter.

Hathaspace advises that you change the filters on average every four months. However, the filters will often last even longer, so in my opinion, some optimal time would be between 4-6 months. I really like the arms that hold the filters in place so they don’t fall out or move, thus keeping them fixed. For example, with the Levoit LV-PUR131, it would be great to have a similar innovation because nothing holds filters. If the device is moved, the filters can fall out.

Total time: 10 minutes.

Step 1 – Open the Front Cover

As soon as you unplug the air purifier, you are ready to open the front plate. Pull it toward you from below. It uses magnets, which will release on the soft pull. After you detach magnets, lift it up and remove it completely. Now you can see filters.

Open the front plate

Step 2 – Pull Out the Filter

Turn buckles that hold the filter and pull them out.

Turn buckles that hold the filter and pull them out.

Step 3 – Insert New Filters

Now you can prepare a new filter by removing the packaging. First place antibacterial and true HEPA filters back into the device. As soon as the first filter is in, you can use the same method to place a nano-cold catalyst filter. Make sure everything is installed correctly. Lock the filters with buckles to secure them.

Insert new filters into the Hathaspace HSP001

Step 4 – Close the Front Cover

Put back the front plate by attaching the top first and then gently let the magnets on the bottom connect. Secure the front plate, and if it is all solid, you can turn on the air purifier.

Seal the front cover

Noise Test

Hathaspace HSP001 is an extremely quiet device. The device has 3 fan speeds. The motor is perfect and does not produce squeaking or any unpleasant sound.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Noise Test
I used a special noise measurement tool to test this air purifier’s noise level.

At first speed, it produces 41.3 dBA, which is very quiet when compared to similar devices. The disadvantage is that the device does not reduce the speed further when it is in sleep mode. However, at the first speed, it is so quiet that this is not a big problem. The table below shows the measurements for all speeds separately.

Speed Value (dBA)
Speed 1 41.3 dBA
Speed 2 43.9 dBA
Speed 3 49.3 dBA

Performance Tests

I tested the Hathaspace HSP001 in several different rooms under different conditions. Hathaspace HSP001 is designed for rooms up to 350 sq. ft.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Performance Tests
I tested this Hathaspace air purifier’s performance using a laser particle meter.

I tested it in rooms of similar or smaller dimensions. Besides, I tried a combination of auto mode and the smart sensor. Thanks to a very precise smart sensor, the HSP001 has produced fantastic results and maintained excellent room air quality without any problems or effort.

Below I will present the tests that I find to be the most interesting. All in all, Hathaspace performed flawlessly in all tests and showed that it can handle almost any challenge without any problems.

The combination of the smart sensor with auto mode has proven to be very reliable whether we are talking about energy savings or device performance.

194 sq. ft. Room Test

I tested the Hathaspace HSP001 in a 194 sq. ft. room. This is a much smaller room than the recommended dimensions. I tried the device for 60 minutes.

During that time, the HSP001 lowered the AQI from 134 to 8, improving air quality by about 94%. This is an excellent result and somewhat expected given the popularity and positive reviews of this product.

# Starting Baseline After 60min
PM 2.5 102.5 6.4
PM 10 143.5 9
Particles 148685 9411
AQI 134 8

320 sq. ft. Room Test

In addition to the first test, I tested the device in a larger room. This time it is a room of 320 sq. ft.

In 60 minutes of operation, the Hathaspace HSP001 improved air quality by about 91%, lowering the AQI from 129 to 11. This is also a perfect result and a confirmation that the Hathaspace HSP001 has excellent performance.

# Starting Baseline After 60min
PM 2.5 98.3 8.5
PM 10 137.7 11.9
Particles 142653 12335
AQI 129 11

Operating Costs

The Hathaspace HSP001 is powered by a 45W motor. The motor is standard power for this type of device. Many competitive air purifiers use even more powerful motors.

Hathaspace HSP001 - Operating Costs
Hathaspace air purifier motor.

I don’t like that the fan speeds are not well optimized, so the HSP001 will consume as much as 20.3W at low speed. Additionally, if it is turned on, the ionizer consumes an additional 0.4W.

Basically, Hathaspace is not a very big consumer. If you leave it on at top speed, 24 hours a day for a month, your electricity bill will increase by about $ 3.

Speed Power Usage (W)
Stand-by 1.4W
Speed 1 20.3W
Speed 2 26.5W
Speed 3 34.8W

However, a much higher cost will be to replace the filter, which is done 2 or 3 times a year. In my opinion, the price for replacement filters is a bit too high. Due to the filter price, Hathaspace is not such a favorable device when we consider the cost of maintenance for one year.

Hathaspace Customer Service and Warranty

Hathaspace offers the option of an extended warranty for between 2 and 5 years. When buying a product, if you subscribe to the filter club, you are entitled to an extended warranty for 5 years.

However, if you do not want to subscribe to the filter club, it would be good to register the purchased product on the Hathaspace website and thus extend the warranty to 2 years. All in all, Hathaspace offers many choices and excellent warranty options.

Screenshot of the fast and immensely helpful response of Hathaspace Customer Support service.
The Hathaspace support is rapid and polite.

I tested the speed and efficiency of Hathaspace support. Definitely, the fastest and most efficient way to get the necessary information or answers from Hathaspace is to contact them via Facebook or via chat option on their website.

There are, of course, other options, such as email.
Email: team@hathaspace.com

I received all the answers in record time. The responses were extensive enough and covered all the questions I asked.

I think subscribing to a filter club is a great option, especially considering the 5-year warranty you get if you’re a club member.

  • Air Quality Sensor
  • Auto Mode
  • Timer
  • Ionizer
  • 5-in-1 Filtration
  • High quality Activated Carbon Filter

Great review but the sensor wasn’t really mentioned in detail the same way as the review of the Winix 5500-2. Is this sensor exclusive to just odors? Ir does it sense the state if dust particles in the air? Thanjs

    • Milan Antonic

      Thanks, Steven.

I will update the Hathaspace HSP001 review very soon with fresh and updated data and some new sections. Anyway, the smart sensor in Hathaspace detects particles as well as odors.
