Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier – Review in 2023 (+Smoke Test)

I have done a lot of research on the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty. My wish finally comes true. I always wanted to test it personally and see with my own eyes all the good claims written on the internet about this device. The price that Coway offers for AP-1512HH can hardly be found elsewhere. After all, Coway is a global brand.

Coway Mighty is designed for rooms up to 361 sq. ft. It uses 4-stage filtration, which includes an ionizer that can be turned off or on as needed. I tested Coway for a while in a variety of rooms and conditions. I can say that this is one of the few devices that I use almost every day.

Did Coway AP-1512HH prove itself on the tests? What kind of advanced features are included? Is it really as good as they say it is? Answers to these questions find out in this review.

Coway AP-1512HH design is what will stand out in the first view. But don’t you dare to think that this air purifier is all about design. This good-looking device has excellent air filtering performance. The reason for that is a true HEPA filter and a decent four-stage filtration system.

Design and Size

Coway AP-1512HH is defined by top-quality craftsmanship. The plastic is of excellent quality. Every part lies in its place, and everything is sealed correctly.

Coway Mighty can be bought in white or black color. But it is also possible to combine the frame’s color located on the front panel. AP-1512HH is built in a squared form with rounded edges. It looks elegant.

Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier Design
I placed the Coway AP-1512HH on a small desk so you can get a picture of how big it really is.

There is a carrying handle on the back right at the top of the device. I noticed something similar in Winix 5500-2 and Winix C535 air purifiers. Because of the handle, Coway AP-1512HH is easy to carry, and there is no possibility of it just slipping out of your hand.

Due to the choice of colors and its luxurious look, the Coway AP-1512HH will fit into almost any ambiance. At the top of the device is a control panel with buttons and indicators, which I will write more about in the next section.

Not only will this air purifier uplift decor in the room, but it will also filter the air at a rapid speed. Check the Coway Mighty tests and see how good it is.

Control Panel

All buttons are located on the control panel (power button, speed control button, ionizer control button, timer button, and filter reset button). There are indicators above each button. If you place the Coway AP-1512HH in front of you, on the control panel, all the way to the right, right next to the filter reset button, is the Air Quality Indicator. The buttons do not light. Only the indicators above the buttons are lightened. A beep is heard at every push of a button.

Coway AP-1512HH - Top Controls
The Coway AP-1512HH control panel is located on the top, and it consists of buttons and indicators.

What I really liked about the Coway AP-1512HH model are the combinations you can do with buttons. For example, you adjust the air quality sensor’s intensity by pressing the speed and ionizer buttons for 2 seconds.

Or, if you want to turn off the Air Quality Indicator, you need to hold your finger on the ionizer button for 3 seconds. I will explain the air quality sensor’s intensity in more detail in the next chapter of the Coway AP-1512HH review.

Airflow

The Coway AP-1512HH draws air directly from the front and through vents on the left, right, and bottom. After that, the air is filtered through 3 basic filters and through the Ionizer if it is turned on. Filtered and clean air comes out on the upper side of the device, vertically upwards.

When positioning the device, get assured that nothing is placed within 22 inches above the machine.

Size and Dimensions

The AP-1512 air purifier weighs 12.34 lb. When I compare it with other devices, it is a bit heavier. However, transferring from location to location will not be a big problem, as the transfer handle is convenient. The exact dimensions of the device are 16.81 x 9.56 x 18.30 inches.

What’s in the box?

When you buy Coway Airmega, you will get 1x Coway AP-1512HH, 1x True HEPA filter, 1x Carbon Filter, 1x User Manual, and 1x Warranty Guide.

Personally, I think that the significant disadvantage is that only one carbon filter comes with the device because this filter needs to be changed on average every 6 months. Since the True HEPA filter needs to be changed every 12 months, I think it would be great if more than one carbon filter comes with the device.

Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier Video Review

Finally, I got a chance to test Coway Mighty AP-1512HH. This magnificent air purifier did not disappoint me. I hope you will enjoy all the features this air purifier offers.

Features Overview

Air Quality Sensor

This kind of option is expected from a quality device like the Coway.

However, I didn’t expect the air quality sensor to be this advanced and that you could adjust sensor sensitivity. The Coway AP-1512HH offers the ability to fix the sensor’s sensitivity at three different levels. The options you can choose are sensitive, standard, and insensitive. The names themselves say how sensitive it is. The sensor will measure the air quality in the room where the device is located.

Coway AP-1512HH - Air Quality Indicator
The air quality indicator is located on the control panel. It is the last one on the right.

The current air quality will be displayed on the Air Quality Indicator located next to the filter reset button. The Air Quality Indicator can show three different colors. When the indicator is blue, the air is of good quality. When the indicator is purple, the air is ordinarily polluted. When the indicator is red, the air is highly polluted.

How to Adjust Air Quality Sensor?

By default, the Coway air purifier is set to standard sensitivity. If pollution levels are high after two hours of working or if the pollution level is low but the air quality does not seem good to you, you can adjust the air quality sensor.

You can adjust the air quality sensor by following these steps:

  1. Press the speed button and Ionizer for two seconds
  2. After that, you will hear a beep in 1-second intervals. The speed indicator will blink and show you the sensor sensitivity.
  3. Now you can set the desired sensitivity level by pressing a speed button. Go for low sensitivity if the room’s pollution stays at the highest level for longer than one hour.
  4. In the end, you need to hold for two seconds the ionizer and speed button to resume regular operation.
You can play with this option and adjust the sensor’s sensitivity to suit you best.

How to Maintain The Air Quality Sensor?

The air quality sensor should be cleaned every two months.

The cleaning process is straightforward. Open the sensor cover located on the side. Using an ear-cleaning brush, clean all parts of the sensor, and remove unwanted dirt.

Auto Mode

While running in auto mode, the Coway AP-1512HH will automatically adjust the speed of the device. Auto mode works by collecting data from the air quality sensor and then adjusting the fan speed accordingly.

Coway AP-1512HH in a dusty environment
The image above shows the Coway AP-1512HH in a dusty environment, where I tested it for dust removal efficiency.

I used Coway on both auto mode and ECO mode. While I used it in the living room, I liked auto mode more, and Coway did a great job operating in auto mode. However, when I used the Coway air purifier in the study room or in the bedroom, I always used it in ECO mode.

ECO Mode

ECO mode is a fantastic option and, personally, my favorite on the Coway AP-1512HH. If I wanted to simplify the way ECO mode works, then I could say that ECO mode is the same as auto mode. However, ECO mode has additional functionality that makes it very different from auto mode. Namely, when Coway is switched to ECO mode, the device will monitor air quality all the time via the air quality sensor. If the air quality during the last 30 minutes is excellent, the device will automatically turn off. In that way, it will save electricity, reduce noise, and, of course, save filters.

Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier - Review
The Coway AP-1512HH is a beautifully designed air purifier that will blend into almost any ambiance.

And that’s not all. The device will stay in stand-y mode, but the air quality sensor will still work, and if the air becomes lousy again, the Coway will turn on automatically and continue the air purification process.

Vital Ion System

I got this info from Coway support: This Coway model features an ionizer. The Ionizer has a switch for on and off. When the LED is illuminated by the button, the Ionizer is on. When the button is not illuminated, it is off. As part of the four-stage filtration process, the bipolar Ionizer produces an electrochemical response that reduces air particles.

I like that the Ionizer is not turned on by default, so anyone can use it as needed. I will explain more information about Ionizer technology in the filtration section.

Timer

A timer is an option that will leave the device running for a certain amount of time and then turn it off automatically. The timer can be set to 1h, 4h, or 8h. This is an excellent option for users who want to run the air purifier for a specific time.

Filter Reset Indicator

This is an option that is standard with almost every air purifier. The filter reset indicator will notify you when it is time to replace the filter. That way, you don’t need to think about a replacement, because Coway does everything for you. My advice is to periodically check the filter for dirt even if the filter reset indicator is not on. This way, you will keep Coway AP-1512HH at maximum performance.

Always pay close attention to which indicator is on to avoid confusion.

Room Coverage and CADR

Coway AP-1512HH is designed for rooms up to 361 sq. ft. It is ideal for rooms where people stay daily, such as the living room, kitchen, or office.

Dust 246
Pollen 240
Smoke 233

Thanks to ECO and auto mode, you can use the Coway AP-1512HH in smaller rooms, and you don’t have to be afraid of wasting electricity. In the table below, I will show you the CADR ratings for the Coway Mighty air purifier.

Filtration Technology

The Coway AP-1512HH uses 4-stage filtration. The first stage of filtration is the pre-filter, the second stage is the carbon filter, and the third stage of filtration is the true HEPA filter. The fourth stage of filtration is optional, and that is the Ionizer.

Coway AP1512HH - Replacement Filter

Coway AP-1512HH Replacement Filter

Always buy genuine filters for the best performance. As soon as the filter reset indicator is on, you are ready to change filters. Do it as quickly as possible.

Check Filter Price On Amazon

Pre-filter

The pre-filter is the first stage of filtration. The primary purpose of the pre-filter is to capture animal fur, large dust particles, and hair.

Coway AP-1512HH - Pre-filter
A washable pre-filter.

The pre-filter is washable and should be cleaned on average between 14 and 28 days. This will protect other filters, extend their lives, and make the device more comfortable at work. My recommendation is that if you have pets, clean up the pre-filter regularly and check it as often as possible.

Carbon filter

The carbon filter is not made up of carbon pellets. The carbon filter in the Coway AP-1512HH is a fibrous filter coated with carbon. Carbon filters’ primary purpose is to reduce VOCs, cigarette fumes, harmful gas, pet odors, food odors, and odors.

Coway AP-1512HH - Activated Carbon Filter
A fibrous filter coated with carbon.

Coway for odor filtration instead of carbon uses the word deodorization filter. I usually say carbon because I think readers better understand what I mean by that. The name “deodorization filter” may confuse some readers. So let’s call it a carbon filter; after all, that’s what it is.

True HEPA filter

The HEPA filter is the third stage of filtration. True HEPA filter captures 99.97% of airborne allergens, including pollen, mold spores, dust, pet dander, microbes, and smoke. It captures all the particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. A true HEPA filter is not washable, and under no circumstances should it be washed in water.

Ionizer

Coway did not write much information about this technology in the manual or on the online product presentation. I contacted Coway to get as much information as possible about this technology.

Here is what Coway say about Ionizer:
Coway air purifiers have built-in, autonomous ionizers that trap airborne particles and clean the air more efficiently in your home.

When the Ionizer is turned on, voltage is applied to a series of built-in needles, generating electrons that are discharged into the air. When these electrons attach to air molecules, ions are formed.

Coway AP-1512HH - Ionizer Button
Coway uses an ionizer which is the fourth stage of filtration, and it can be turned on or off.

These negative ions are dispersed into the room where they attach to dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, and pet dander to form more massive particles, which can more easily be trapped by the Coway air purifier. However, these particles can also descend to the floor to be vacuumed later.

How to Replace Coway AP-1512HH Filter?

Coway AP-1512HH filters should be replaced when the filter reset indicators light up. Coway has two indicators to reset the filter. One informs that it is time to replace the HEPA filter, which needs to be changed every 12 months.

The second indicator informs that it is time to replace the carbon filter, which should be changed every 6 months.

Besides, my suggestion is to check every now and then the filter condition and whether the pre-filter is dirty. It is necessary to clean the pre-filter every 2-4 weeks. You can clean it with a vacuum cleaner, with a cloth, or simply wash it.

Total time: 10 minutes.

Step 1

Turn off the device and after that make sure the power cord is not connected. Then, open the front cover by pulling out the top part of it.

Step 2

First, pull the pre-filter out, and immediately after that, take all filters out from the Coway air purifier.

Does Coway AP-1512HH Produce Ozone?

There is not much info online about ozone production, so I asked them again. Here is the answer:

When utilizing the Ionizer feature of select Coway purifiers, they produce a tiny amount of ozone. The 8hr. TWA ozone for Coway products is 0.0011 ppmv when tested in a 30M/3 chamber.

Coway AP-1512HH In Front of the Desk
I placed the Coway AP-1512HH in front of my office desk.

Coway Mighty (AP-1512HH) Ionizer will produce 1 million or 10^6 pcs/cm3 32ft. This product complies with the maximum allowable concentration of ozone of 0.050 parts per million by volume (ppmv) in 24 hours. The Health Canada Guideline 2010 recommends that the maximum exposure limit, based on an averaging time of 8 hours, is 0.020 ppmv or less when tested in a sealed, controlled room approximately 30 m³.

The sticker of the product indicates this product is 0.0011 ppmv, as you found. So this product passed the regulation, and the amount of ozone is much lower than the regulation demands. All of the electrical and electronic products generate a tiny amount of ozone.

Noise Test

The Coway AP-1512HH is extremely quiet at the first speed, so you almost won’t notice it working.

At second speed, it’s a bit louder. While the third speed is too loud, it is difficult to stay in the room while the device is working on the third speed. Fortunately, it turned out to me that the need for a third speed is not very common.

Coway AP-1512HH - Noise Test
I used a special tool to measure the Coway AP-1512HH noise levels at all speeds.

The motor is of good quality. No buzzing or similar irritating sounds are heard. At first speed, the Coway AP-1512HH produces 41.4 dBA of noise. At the second speed, it creates a noise of 44.6 dBA. At the third speed, it makes a noise of 63.5 dBA.

Speed Value (dBA)
Speed 1 41.4 dBA
Speed 2 44.6 dBA
Speed 3 63.5 dBA

I am delighted with the noise levels of the Coway air purifier. Mainly since I tested it in the bedroom for a while. And I didn’t have any problems with the noise at the first speed. If you plan to use Coway in the bedroom, I recommend that you always use it at first speed or possibly in ECO mode. Never leave it running in auto mode while you sleep, as this risks Coway shifting to a higher speed that is much louder and may wake you up.

Performance Tests

Coway AP-1512HH is an air purifier designed for rooms up to 361 sq. ft. I have tested all air purifiers so far in the same way. I measure their performance in a room of specific dimensions for 60 minutes. Apart from these tests, I use the devices every day for a particular period. Based on all this data, I come to the final conclusion.

Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier - Performance Tests
I used a laser particle matter for performance testing purposes.

I mostly advise users to start the air purifier first at the highest speed, hold it for 10-20 minutes, and then switch it to a slower speed. This is not the case with Coway as it offers a host of advanced features that make no need for calculations.

In the tests, I did not use the ECO mode, and I did not use Ionizer. I didn’t use the Ionizer because I don’t practice it very often, and ECO mode because it’s hard to measure performance in that mode and display results.

If the room air quality is continuously low, increase the sensitivity of the air quality sensor, or leave the device running at speed 3 for a while.

320 sq. ft. Room Test

I tested the Coway AP-1512HH in a room of 320 sq. ft. The device was running at third speed all the time for 60min. During that time, Coway lowered the AQI from 148 to 6 and drastically improved the air by 96%. I can say that this is one of the better results I have gotten so far by testing air purifiers. Below you can see a table with a detailed view of all values.

# Starting Baseline After 60min
PM 2.5 113.8 4.7
PM 10 159.3 6.6
Particles 165036 6864
AQI 148 6

320 sq. ft. Room Test – Auto Mode

I tested the Coway Mighty again in a 320 sq. ft. room. This time I switched the device to auto mode. Besides, I changed the sensitivity of the air quality sensor to “Standard.” The Coway AP-1512HH improved air quality by about 90% in 60 minutes. The device lowered the AQI from 134 to 13. I am delighted with this result, as well. If I had increased the air quality sensor sensitivity to “Sensitive,” I believe Coway would have made even better results.

# Starting Baseline After 60min
PM 2.5 102.9 9.3
PM 10 144.1 13.1
Particles 149297 13613
AQI 134 13

Operating Costs

The Coway AP-1512HH is powered by a 77W motor. The motor power is slightly higher than I expected; however, ECO mode and other accessories contribute to the fact that Coway is not a very big energy consumer.

Suppose you leave Coway Mighty running at third fan speed, 24 hours a day for a period of 30 days. In that case, your electricity bill will be increased by about $ 6. Don’t be fooled by this consumption. In combination with ECO mode and other lower fan speeds, this figure is smaller.

Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier - Operating Costs
The Coway AP-1512HH has a huge motor of 77W.

I have already explained that the ECO mode will turn off the device if the air is clean. The device consumes about 1.3W of electricity when in stand-by mode.

Note that the Ionizer will consume an additional 1.2W if turned on. See the table below for detailed power consumption by speed. Another thing to keep in mind is the cost of replacing the filter. The good thing is that the filters are changed every 12 months.

Speed Power Usage (W)
Standby 0.2W
Speed 1 3.6W
Speed 2 8.1W
Speed 3 69.1W

Let’s take into account the price of replacement filters, power consumption, and ECO mode. Coway won’t cost you much on an annual basis. Especially when you take into account what you get in return.

The Coway AP-1512HH is a big consumer on paper, but it is several times smaller in practice.

Coway Warranty and Customer Service

Coway offers a 3-year limited warranty for this model. To register, you need to go to the Coway Mega website and enter your purchase details.

I contacted Coway support via Email and via Facebook. I waited a little longer for an answer via Facebook. However, I received a quick, efficient, and pervasive response via Email. Email support is very accommodating, and they are ready to explain any ambiguity in detail and solve any problem together.

Contact email: info@cowaymega.com

Contact phone number: 1-800-285-0982

My recommendation is to contact them via Email. Because that way, you will get the most comprehensive and detailed answer. For all urgent questions, there is, of course, telephone support.

FAQ

Does Coway AP-1512HH produce ozone?

Coway AP-1512HH produces a tiny amount of ozone and only when the Ionizer is turned on. Even that small tiny amount of ozone is well under law limits. Check out the Ionizer section in this Coway Mighty review.

What does Coway Ionizer do?

The Ionizer additionally cleans the air. It uses advanced technology to make small particles bigger and easier to catch.

When should I change Coway AP-1512HH filters?

Coway AP-1512HH filters should be changed on average every 12 months. Specifically, the true HEPA filter should be changed every 12 months, and the carbon filters every 6 months. Note that with the replacement filter, you get two carbon filters.

Is it ok to leave the air purifier over night?

Yes, there will be no problems if you leave it all night. However, my advice is to use ECO mode, and I think this is a far better option than just letting the device run at some speed.

Is it safe to be in a room with an ionizer feature turned on?

It is. The tiny amount of ozone that this device produces when the Ionizer is on is way under the law limits.

Final Thoughts

As I stated at the beginning of the review, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is one of the devices I have always wanted to test. My experience with the Coway air purifier has lived up to expectations. It is even a little above expectation in some segments. The Coway AP-1512HH did great on all tests, especially when it comes to performance.

I think this device is ideal for the living room, bedroom, office, or even basement. The warranty for the Coway AP-1512HH is three years. Support is fast and helpful. Because of all the above, Coway AP-1512HH is my absolute recommendation to buy.

    Hi

How would this filter work in a room that was about 700sq ft? I see that your review says it is for a room about half that size but I am looking at the specs for various Coway filters on Amazon and it says it is good for 109m3/1173sq ft. That’s quite a difference. Could you help me understand the implications of using it in a room that is about 700sq ft? Presuming that the CADR would be halved? But it would not be ineffective? Thank you so much.

    • Milan Antonic

      Hi,

I use the AHAM-defined industry standard when determining a room coverage of an air purifier, which is 4.8 ACH (air changes per hour).

The Coway AP-1512HH can clean the air 4.8 times in a room of 361 sq. ft. But, it also can clean the air 2 times in a room of 874 sq. ft.

My answer is yes, you can use it in larger rooms (but less polluted), but keep in mind that it is the most efficient in rooms of up to 361 sq. ft.

  2. Steven

Thanks for the review, Milan. And I have 2 questions. When the HEPA filter is replaced the filter reset indicator must then be reset. Does this mean the filter reset indicator runs on a 1-year timer as opposed to some other method to indicate time to change the filter – such as automatically sensing decreased air flow thru dirty filter, etc.? Also, to reset the filter-reset indicator do you press the power button or the filter-reset button? You mention in step #5 the power button should be pressed for 2 seconds but the photo shows your finger on the filter reset button.

    • Milan Antonic

Hi Steven. Thanks for your comment.

Yes, there is a timer inside, so the device doesn’t track the filter’s dirty.

As for resetting the filter section, I made a typo there. You must press and hold the “Filter Reset” instead of the “Power” button. Thanks for pointing out the typo.

are you guys able to do a ozone test on the Coway AP-1512HH True HEPA Air Purifier when the ionizer is turned on and when it is turned off i have been researching if this air purifier emits ozone when ionizer is turned off and i am getting different answers

  4. Linda

Wow! Thank you for the detailed review. I am much more confident now that I made the right choice when I purchased this model. I hadn’t seen your page when I was researching but this model came highly recommended though not so thoroughly reviewed. We have had it for just three days now and getting used to how it works. I’ve moved it through the day to different rooms and it only turned purple for a while in the kitchen while cooking otherwise it’s hard to know if it’s doing what’s its supposed to as it’s always blue (a good thing I suppose!). I will keep your page handy for reference. Thanks again

  5. Looking for Purifier

If my rooms are smaller than 320 sq ft but my total home is 320 sq ft, should I buy a single coway or separate but lower sized purifiers ? What would be your recommandation ? If I put this one of the rooms does it make sense for all home even if bedrooms and living room are a bit far from each ?

  6. Sarah Bardin

Thank you for this, as I found the manual confusing to navigate. Quick question: I just bought a Coway Mighty and set it up yesterday. When I open the particle sensor there is a small rectangular piece of foam stuck to the inside flap. Am I supposed to remove it, or it stays there? The reason I ask is that to my surprise, when I put the air purifier on “auto” it seems to stay on “blue” all the time, except when I opened the the particle sensor to look at it. I set the sensitivity to 3, which I believe is the highest, using your instructions. Any thoughts would be appreciated. You are performing such a great public service. Thank you.

    • Milan Antonic

Hi! You don’t have to remove a piece of foam located in the particles sensor box.

Actually, the first one is the most sensitive setting, so please try switching the sensor sensitivity to the first option.

  7. Wayne

Since you only get 1 carbon filter with the unit, where do I get another? The website has them for a ridiculous $20. Can I stretch it out, or use it without the carbon filter?

    • Milan Antonic

You can use the Coway AP-1512HH without a carbon filter, but that is not recommended because it would decrease the air purifying performance. The cheapest solution I can suggest is buying a replacement filter from any third-part distributer, which you can find many on Amazon.

  8. Kull ulard

Am I wasting my money if I use this in a room larger than 320 sq. ft?

  9. Gian Marco Conte

Hi, do you have recommendations for the filters replacements? Thank you

  10. HH

I have purchased 2 of these Coway units. I had to return one of them because the fan was very wobbly, and the unit vibrated. The other unit was fine. If you read some customer reviews, you will see a number of people have experienced the same issue. Probably bad quality control. If you get one with no wobble, it’s an excellent unit ( Coway 1512HH )

I’m looking for a good air purifier for a multiple pet house hold. You buyer recommendation page looks like it was last updated in 2017. I saw you high reviews for both the Cowell and the Winix 5500. Would you recommend either of these to minimize pet odor? Or are the ones on the buyer recommended pet page still applicable.

      Hello, thanks for your comment.
Both are extraordinary air purifiers and the best ones I have ever used. I would suggest the Winix 5500-2 for your situation because of the efficiency of its carbon filter.

Thanks for the very informative review. I like the looks and specs of this unit.
I just purchased one at Amazon.
You made my research a lot easier.
