IKEA FÖRNUFTIG and TruSens Z-1000 are two air purifiers characterized by simplicity, minimalism, and affordable price. Being globally available makes these two very often compared among the consumers.
So, in this article, I will compare these two air purifiers in detail. I will compare their performance, power usage, replacement filter costs, noise levels, etc. In that way, you would be able to decide which one is better for you, just by reading this article.
Table of Contents
The IKEA FÖRNUFTIG covers rooms of 108 sq. ft., while the TruSens Z-1000 covers rooms up to 250 sq. ft. They don’t use a True HEPA filter. Instead, they have a specific filtration technology but are still efficient enough.
When comparing their design, I don’t have any complaints on either. I like the simplicity, build quality, and especially the front cover on the IKEA, and the shape, build quality, and carrying handle on TruSens.
Are you in a hurry? If so, I suggest jumping to the testing sections, just below the filtration section, and reading the most exciting parts of this comparison.

IKEA and TruSnes Features
As I said at the beginning of the article, the IKEA FÖRNUFTIG and TruSens Z-1000 lack advanced features and don’t have almost any feature to highlight.
They are not that basic, as they both have a filter reset indicator, which will light up when it is time to replace the old filters. This feature is handy, but almost any air purifier on the market has it.
When speaking of controls, the TruSens Z-1000 uses the touch buttons, while the IKEA uses a mechanical wheel. That means you can connect the IKEA air purifier with a smart plug and, in that way, make it semi-smart.
Other than that, IKEA has a possibility of being mounted on the wall, and in that way, you can save some space in your room.
Filtration Technology
The filtration technology is where things are starting to be more interesting. You are wondering why? Simply because these two air purifiers don’t have a True HEPA filter but still made outstanding results in performance tests.
The IKEA FÖRNUFTIG uses a two-stage filtration with the possibility of buying a carbon filter separately, which is the third filtration stage. So, the first stage of filtration is a gray washable pre-filter. The second stage is HEPA 12 filter, and the last stage is, as I said, the pellet-based carbon filter.
On the TruSens Z-1000, the situation is a bit different. It uses a three-stage filtration consisting of a carbon pre-filter, HEPA filter, and UV-C light. The UV-C light is the last filtration stage, and it can be turned off depending on user needs. I like the possibility of buying an additional filter for the TruSens, which are for different purposes and situations.
How to Replace Filters?
Since these air purifiers don’t use washable filters (except the IKEA’s pre-filter), you have to change them from time to time. Luckily you don’t have to track the filter replacing time manually, as both air purifiers have a filter reset indicator.
On IKEA, the filter replacement time is usually between 4 and 6 months. While the TruSens filter needs to be changed every 12-15 months, which is the time range suggested by the manufacturer, which I don’t think is totally reliable.
The filter replacing process is straightforward, and if you are unsure how to do it, there are explanations in the individual reviews you can read on the links below.
Noise Test
When comparing noise, the first thing I noticed is that the TruSens works somehow more smoothly, and its motor sound is a bit more pleasant.
But, after using the special noise measurement tool, I have discovered that the IKEA air purifier is overall quieter. For instance, the IKEA FÖRNUFTIG produces a sound of 42.2 dBA on the first speed, while the TruSens Z-1000 produces a sound of 43.8 dBA on the first speed as well.
On the max speeds, the situation is identical. IKEA produces 58.2 dBA, while the TruSens produces 64.4 dBA.
Product | Noise Range (dBA) |
---|---|
TruSens Z-1000 | 43.8 – 64.4 dBA |
IKEA FÖRNUFTIG | 42.2 – 58.2 dBA |
They both have just three fan speeds, and not having sleep mode options is a huge minus for me, mainly because I like fancy using an air purifier in the bedroom. Overall, the IKEA and TruSens are not too loud, and I believe any of them will easily find a place in your home.
Performance Tests
My biggest complaint about these air purifiers is their filtration technology. First and foremost, I wouldn’t say I like the lacking of True HEPA filters.
The IKEA FÖRNUFTIG is intended for rooms up to 108 sq. ft., while the TruSens Z-1000 is intended for rooms up to 250 sq. ft.
Since the TruSens covers slightly larger rooms, I somehow expected that it would make better results in performance tests, especially when used in larger rooms. Keep scrolling and find out in the next heading how much better is the TruSens Z-1000 compared to IKEA FÖRNUFTIG.
194 sq. ft. Room Tests
In the first test, in the room the 194 sq. ft., which is larger than the recommended dimensions for IKEA and smaller than the recommended dimensions for the TruSens, they both showed excellent performance.
IKEA improved the air quality by about 89% in just 60 minutes, working at the max speed all the time. On the other hand, the TruSens showed a better performance and improved the air quality by about 93%, in the same conditions and for the same time.
194 sq. ft. Room
* Data measuring time is 60 minutes.
Overall, I’m delighted with the results these two made in this test, especially considering the lack of the True HEPA filter. Apart from this test, I have performed a few more tests, and you can find the results in the individual reviews on the Air Purifier First website.
Operating Costs
When speaking of power usage, I want to say that TruSens uses more than twice the power that IKEA uses. The IKEA FÖRNUFTIG has a motor of 19W, while the TruSens Z-1000 has a motor of 40W.
IKEA uses as low as 13.2W on the max speed, while the TruSens uses 41.2W on the max speed. So, if you left any of these runs on the max speed, 24h daily, for one month, the IKEA would increase your electrical bills by about $ 1.2, while the TruSens would increase your electrical bill by about $ 3.6 in the same conditions.
Product | Wattage Range (W) |
---|---|
TruSens Z-1000 | 0.2 – 41.2W |
IKEA FÖRNUFTIG | 1.2 – 13.2W |
Apart from the power costs, there is the cost of the replacement filters, which is lower for the TruSens because it uses much more durable filters.
When putting all this into the calculation, IKEA is slightly more expensive for maintenance annually. Even though IKEA uses less power, it has costly replacing filters (especially the carbon filter) that last shorter than TruSens filters.
Which One Does It Better?
We came to the end of the comparison, and this is where the spears break. After analyzing all the aspects, specifications, and test results of these two air purifiers, I have chosen the winner.
In my opinion, the TruSens Z-1000 is a better buying option than the IKEA FÖRNUFTIG. The reasons are many, but I would like to highlight better performance, UV-C light, more additional filter options, and it looks a bit more modern.
IKEA is also a fantastic air purifier. It is actually a bit cheaper initially and uses less power, so if these are your main concerns, you could go with the IKEA air purifier instead.
If you are not sure about these two air purifiers’ efficiency, you may want to buy an air purifier with a True HEPA filter. In that case, I suggest reading other reviews and comparisons on the Air Purifier First website. If you have any questions feel free to ask them in the comments section below.
