Best Air Purifiers for City Smog and Pollution – Tested!

Don’t let city smog or traffic fumes affect your health. Discover the best air purifiers for urban homes and highly polluted areas.

People living in cities or suburbs are exposed to high levels of PM2.5 and PM10 particles, traffic smog, construction dust, and industrial emissions.

The problem is that these pollutants are often invisible, yet they slowly harm our bodies from the inside. The truth is, we’re tied to the city, polluted or not, because that’s where our jobs, families, and daily lives are.

In my opinion, the best option for large cities filled with traffic, smog, dust, and similar pollutants is an air purifier with the highest possible CADR.

The Levoit Core 600S fits that description perfectly. With a CADR of 410 CFM (697 m³/h), it can effectively cover rooms up to 635 sq. ft. (59 m²).

It uses a large, efficient filter that excels at capturing dust particles, PM2.5, and PM10, and, most importantly, it includes a pellet-based carbon filter that helps neutralize unpleasant odors such as smog.

However, keep in mind that for heavy smog or strong VOCs and odors, there are even better options than this Levoit, such as the IQAir HealthPro Plus and Austin Air models, which I’ll cover later in the article.

In my view, the Levoit Core 600S is perfect for a larger apartment or house in the city, or for an open-space living room and kitchen. What I also like about this model is the number of advanced and smart features, including an air quality sensor.

All in all, choosing the Levoit Core 600S is a decision you won’t regret. Just remember that it’s a large air purifier and will take up a fair amount of space.

IQAir is one of the leading air purifier manufacturers and one of the longest-standing brands on the market.

The IQAir HealthPro Plus is a premium air purifier featuring highly efficient filtration technology that achieved some of the best results in our performance tests.

According to IQAir, its HyperHEPA filter captures ultrafine particles as small as 0.003 microns. It also includes a significant amount of pellet-based activated carbon that effectively adsorbs gaseous pollutants and VOCs.

This model is best suited for rooms up to 406 sq. ft. (37.7 m²), which I find perfectly good, although it doesn’t quite match the CADR or coverage of some similarly sized air purifiers.

In my opinion, the IQAir HealthPro Plus is the ideal choice if you live in a heavily polluted city affected by smog, dust, heavy traffic, or fine particulate pollution.

Just keep in mind that its price is higher than most other models on this list, and its replacement filters are also more expensive, though they last for an impressive 3–4 years.

The Levoit Vital 200S is one of the best air purifiers for most users and has remained on our list of top-tested models for several years.

Considering its price, build quality, efficiency, and features, it’s hard to find a better or more effective option.

I recommend this device for modern city apartments in areas with consistently high pollution levels. It covers rooms up to 380 sq. ft. (35 m²), uses a three-stage filtration system, and comes packed with smart features.

In our performance tests, it delivered outstanding results, especially in the smoke test, where it removed all smoke from the glass box in just 15 seconds. That’s an excellent result and clear proof of why this model is so efficient and one I often recommend.

Overall, the Levoit Vital 200S is an excellent choice for users living in urban areas who don’t have much space but want a reliable, high-performing air purifier.

It’s easy to place against a wall or on an elevated surface without disrupting your room’s aesthetics, all while providing top-tier air purification performance.

We can say that the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. is a premium option, much like the IQAir, but with one important difference: the Austin Air excels at removing VOCs, gases, smoke, and traffic-related odors, although it performs slightly weaker when it comes to capturing airborne particles.

Because of that, I recommend the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. for extremely polluted areas with heavy smog or similar pollutants. Honestly, you won’t find a better model for this specific purpose.

The Austin Air is somewhat more compact than the IQAir, has a lower CADR, and covers smaller rooms, but it’s also extremely efficient.

It’s designed for spaces up to 185 sq. ft. (17 m²). I believe the reason for its smaller coverage lies in its very dense filter, which restricts airflow; this affects the CADR and the overall coverage area.

All in all, while it may not look as sleek or modern as some other models, it’s exceptionally effective against odors and especially useful for people sensitive to gases and VOCs, as well as those living in heavily polluted environments.

  • It features three-stage filtration technology, consisting of a Pre-filter, Carbon Filter, and True HEPA Filter.
  • In performance tests, it achieved excellent results, performs well for light smoke neutralization (especially the version with a pellet-based carbon filter), and includes a washable pre-filter.

The Coway Airmega 150 is a compact air purifier that’s ideal for small apartments, bedrooms, or offices.

Although it’s not designed for demanding tasks like some of the other models on this list, the Coway Airmega 150 handles its job very well, and it performs effectively in smaller rooms.

What I particularly like is that the Airmega 150 comes with a True HEPA filter and also offers an option to upgrade to a pellet-based carbon filter (note: the pellet-based filter is available only in the EU version of the device).

It has no advanced features, no ionizer, produces no ozone, and is completely safe to use.

In performance tests performed in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room, it improved air quality by about 94%.

It’s also very well optimized for noise, making it an excellent choice for a small bedroom, or even a children’s room, especially if you want to ensure clean air throughout the night.

FAQ on Air Purifiers for Traffic Pollution

Can air purifiers remove city smog and car exhaust?

Yes, that’s exactly why I created this list of air purifiers for urban pollution. The HEPA filter removes PM2.5 particles, while the activated carbon filter eliminates odors, gases, and VOCs from traffic.

Should I run an air purifier 24/7?

Yes, that’s definitely something I recommend, especially in heavily polluted environments. If your air purifier has an air quality sensor (even better if it can detect odors), you can simply leave it running in Auto mode.

How often should I replace filters if I live in a polluted city?

In heavily polluted areas, you may need to replace the filters more frequently than the manufacturer recommends. However, it depends on several factors — how intensively you use the device, the level of pollution, and the quality of the filters.

Where should I place the air purifier in a city apartment?

Since the purpose of the device in such environments is to filter the air coming in from outside, it’s best to place your air purifier near a window, balcony door, or another area where air enters the room.

However, if you have an open-space layout, position the device closer to the center of the room for optimal airflow.

Is it safe to keep the windows open with an air purifier running?

Logically speaking, this isn’t recommended. However, indoor air can become stale over time.

While I generally advise against it, I sometimes open a window briefly during winter, even when there’s smog outside, and then close it shortly after, running the air purifier at maximum speed to refresh the air while keeping it clean.

The best approach is to monitor outdoor air quality and open your windows only when pollution levels are at their lowest.

Final Conclusion

You live in a large, polluted city, and the very fact that you’re looking for an air purifier is a good sign; it shows that your awareness of air quality is higher than that of most people.

I’ve created a list of the best air purifiers you can buy for this purpose, and whichever one you choose, you won’t go wrong.

However, I believe the Levoit Vital 200S is the best choice for most users, while for more extreme conditions and heavier pollution, you might consider something like the IQAir HealthPro Plus.
