The importance of air purifiers can’t be overstated, and I’m truly glad to see that more and more people are starting to recognize this, especially those living in big cities.
In this article, I’ve compiled a list of what I believe are the five best air purifiers you can buy if you live in a large, polluted city and need a device that effectively reduces VOCs, airborne dust, gases, and other common pollutants.
All the air purifiers on this list use high-quality filters, were performed exceptionally well in our tests, and have my absolute buying recommendation.

In my opinion, the best option for large cities filled with traffic, smog, dust, and similar pollutants is an air purifier with the highest possible CADR.
The Levoit Core 600S fits that description perfectly. With a CADR of 410 CFM (697 m³/h), it can effectively cover rooms up to 635 sq. ft. (59 m²).

In my view, the Levoit Core 600S is perfect for a larger apartment or house in the city, or for an open-space living room and kitchen. What I also like about this model is the number of advanced and smart features, including an air quality sensor.
All in all, choosing the Levoit Core 600S is a decision you won’t regret. Just remember that it’s a large air purifier and will take up a fair amount of space.

IQAir is one of the leading air purifier manufacturers and one of the longest-standing brands on the market.
The IQAir HealthPro Plus is a premium air purifier featuring highly efficient filtration technology that achieved some of the best results in our performance tests.
According to IQAir, its HyperHEPA filter captures ultrafine particles as small as 0.003 microns. It also includes a significant amount of pellet-based activated carbon that effectively adsorbs gaseous pollutants and VOCs.
This model is best suited for rooms up to 406 sq. ft. (37.7 m²), which I find perfectly good, although it doesn’t quite match the CADR or coverage of some similarly sized air purifiers.
In my opinion, the IQAir HealthPro Plus is the ideal choice if you live in a heavily polluted city affected by smog, dust, heavy traffic, or fine particulate pollution.
Just keep in mind that its price is higher than most other models on this list, and its replacement filters are also more expensive, though they last for an impressive 3–4 years.

Austin Air HealthMate Jr. – Heavy-Duty Option for Traffic Areas

Austin Air HealthMate Jr. Highlights
- This small air purifier covers rooms up to 185 sq. ft. (17 m²).
- It uses four-stage filtration technology, consisting of a Large Particle Pre-filter, Medium Particle Pre-filter, Activated Carbon and Zeolite, and True Medical Grade HEPA filter.
- It doesn’t include any advanced features and looks a bit outdated, but it’s the most effective device for eliminating bad odors.
- It uses a 60W motor, has long-lasting filters (up to 5 years), and is very well optimized for noise.
We can say that the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. is a premium option, much like the IQAir, but with one important difference: the Austin Air excels at removing VOCs, gases, smoke, and traffic-related odors, although it performs slightly weaker when it comes to capturing airborne particles.
Because of that, I recommend the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. for extremely polluted areas with heavy smog or similar pollutants. Honestly, you won’t find a better model for this specific purpose.
The Austin Air is somewhat more compact than the IQAir, has a lower CADR, and covers smaller rooms, but it’s also extremely efficient.
It’s designed for spaces up to 185 sq. ft. (17 m²). I believe the reason for its smaller coverage lies in its very dense filter, which restricts airflow; this affects the CADR and the overall coverage area.
All in all, while it may not look as sleek or modern as some other models, it’s exceptionally effective against odors and especially useful for people sensitive to gases and VOCs, as well as those living in heavily polluted environments.

The Coway Airmega 150 is a compact air purifier that’s ideal for small apartments, bedrooms, or offices.
Although it’s not designed for demanding tasks like some of the other models on this list, the Coway Airmega 150 handles its job very well, and it performs effectively in smaller rooms.
What I particularly like is that the Airmega 150 comes with a True HEPA filter and also offers an option to upgrade to a pellet-based carbon filter (note: the pellet-based filter is available only in the EU version of the device).
It has no advanced features, no ionizer, produces no ozone, and is completely safe to use.
In performance tests performed in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room, it improved air quality by about 94%.
It’s also very well optimized for noise, making it an excellent choice for a small bedroom, or even a children’s room, especially if you want to ensure clean air throughout the night.
