I hand-picked these models based on parameters that matter most to apartment owners, as well as on our own testing data.

The only minor drawback of this model is that it uses a slightly more powerful motor than I’d expect for such a compact purifier. The Winix motor is rated at 55W.
Overall, I’d recommend this air purifier for small apartments or bedrooms in rental units.

Austin Air HealthMate Jr. – For Smoke in Rentals

Austin Air HealthMate Jr. Highlights
- This small air purifier covers rooms up to 185 sq. ft. (17 m²).
- The Austin Air HealthMate Jr. uses a four-stage filtration system consisting of a Large Particle Pre-Filter, Medium Particle Pre-Filter, Activated Carbon and Zeolite, and a True Medical-Grade HEPA filter.
- The filters last an incredible 5 years, which is among the longest lifespans on the market.
- In performance tests, it delivered excellent results. It uses a 60W motor and is very well optimized for noise. At the lowest speed, it produces just 40.6 dBA of sound.
The Austin Air HealthMate Jr. is an unmatched model when it comes to neutralizing unpleasant odors.
Simply put, if guests smoke in your apartment, if you have issues with secondhand smoke, or if you struggle with VOCs, the Austin Air is exactly what you need.
The only drawback of this air purifier is its design — it’s not particularly attractive and may not blend well with the interiors of most rental apartments. Its design has remained unchanged for decades.

However, when it comes to odor neutralization, nothing beats it. So it’s up to you to decide whether the design compromise is worth it.
In all our tests, it achieved excellent results, performing perfectly in the smoke test. It’s a bit slower at capturing airborne particles than some of the other models on this list, especially the Levoit Vital 200S.
All in all, if odor removal is your main concern, the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. (or one of its larger models) is the only option you should seriously consider.
