Below, I’ve highlighted some of the best air purifiers we’ve tested—devices I would confidently recommend to anyone dealing with mold issues.

Levoit Core 600S – Best for Large Spaces with Mold

Why did I choose the Levoit Core 600S as the best option for removing mold spores?

Simply put, this air purifier features high-quality filtration, contains a substantial amount of carbon pellets, and has a very high CADR.

These are exactly the features needed to quickly, efficiently, and effectively remove airborne mold spores from the air.

In our particle removal test conducted in a 320 sq. ft. (30 m²) room, the Winix 5510 reduced PM2.5 levels from 104.9 to just 4.7 µg/m³, which is an impressive result and particularly relevant when choosing an air purifier for removing airborne mold spores.

It also excelled in the smoke test, clearing all the smoke from our glass test chamber in just 20 seconds.

For mold, it’s very important that an air purifier has strong airflow and high-quality filters. That’s where the Levoit Core 400S stands out. With a CADR of 260 CFM (442 m³/h) and a three-stage filtration system, it’s an excellent option for spaces filled with airborne mold spores.

In addition, you can purchase the optional Smoke Remover filter for the Core 400S, which further enhances its ability to reduce mold-related odors in the room. The Smoke Remover filter contains as much as 450g of carbon pellets, while the original filter includes only about 240g.

Another big advantage of the Levoit Core 400S is that it features an air quality sensor and auto mode. This is especially helpful if you’re using it to prevent mold growth in a basement or in a room you don’t enter every day. It can automatically adjust its fan speed based on air quality, but you can also control it remotely through the VeSync smart app.

Austin Air HealthMate Jr. – Best for Mold Odors

Right after testing the Austin Air, I knew it would earn a spot in many of our Air Purifier First buying guides, especially those focused on odor neutralization.

The same applies to mold-related odors. Thanks to its high-quality carbon filter combined with zeolite, the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. is easily one of the best options for neutralizing unpleasant smells, including those caused by mold.

However, in our airborne particle removal tests, it performed slightly worse than other models on this list. Surprisingly, not even the Medical-Grade HEPA filter significantly boosted its performance in this regard.

In my opinion, the issue lies in its very low CADR. A higher CADR would likely result in much better overall efficiency.

What’s important to understand is that the Austin Air doesn’t offer any advanced or smart features. It’s a classic, no-frills air purifier, but a very effective one when it comes to eliminating persistent mold-related odors.

Levoit Core 300 – Compact and Budget Option

For example, my parent’s house has a room right next to the garage, which is not well insulated. The north side is exposed to high humidity, which is why a lot of moisture appeared inside the room (this problem goes back a long time).
