- The Austin Air has a small CADR and covers rooms of just 185 sq. ft. (17 m²).
- It uses four-stage filtration technology consisting of Large Particle Pre-filter, Medium Particle Pre-filter, Activated Carbon and Zeolite, and True Medical Grade HEPA.
- It has made pretty good results in our odor and VOC neutralization tests, but lacks the performance in airborne particle removal tests.
- The Austin Air doesn’t have any features, it uses a motor of 60W and produces a sound in a range of 40.6 – 54.7 dBA.
People with asthma can be sensitive to odors and chemical fumes (VOCs), and that’s where the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. comes in.
This air purifier uses the best carbon filter on our list and is the most effective air purifier for VOCs that we’ve tested. It contains about 6.5 lbs of carbon pellets, which is more than 10 times than what the Winix 5510 contains.
In addition, the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. uses a medical-grade True HEPA filter. However, it wasn’t as efficient in our airborne particle removal tests as some other air purifiers. To be frank, the Winix 5510 performed significantly better in that area.
It’s also worth noting that the Austin Air’s filters last up to five years, and the device itself is very minimalistic. It doesn’t include any smart or advanced features, just a simple control knob for adjusting fan speed.
Overall, if your asthma is primarily triggered by VOCs, gases, or odors, the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. is the air purifier you need.

The Coway AP-1512HH is also a solid choice for people dealing with asthma. I picked this air purifier as a great option for allergies and for capturing pet dander.
However, there’s one potential drawback for asthma sufferers: it features an ionizer, which produces ozone as a byproduct. Since ozone can trigger asthma symptoms, it’s generally not recommended to use an air purifier with this feature.
The good news is that the ionizer is turned off by default, and you never have to activate it. As long as the ionizer remains off, the unit doesn’t produce ozone, making it safe to use.

All of the air purifiers I recommended above are medium-to-large models and don’t fall into the budget category. That’s why I chose the Winix A231 as my fifth recommendation for asthma.
This is a small and compact, yet highly efficient air purifier. In our performance test in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room, it improved air quality by 95% in just 60 minutes.
What I like about this purifier is its high-quality True HEPA filter, affordable price, low-cost replacement filters, and well-optimized motor that keeps noise levels reasonable.
Considering its size and price, it also has a very solid CADR.
Although the Winix A231 lacks smart features, it does include useful additions such as an air quality sensor, air quality indicator, and auto mode.
In summary, I consider the Winix A231 the best budget-friendly option for asthma.
